  General Notes:

No birth or baptism record of Isabella Haimes has been found as yet.

Isabella was recorded as 3 years of age by the 1841 census for St John's Haddington where she lived with her family on High Street. She had been born in East Lothian.

The 1851 census for Haddington, East Lothian, recorded Isabella Haimes living at the home of her parents in the High Street. She was recorded as 11 years of age and had been born in Haddington. She was a scholar.

Isabella Nisbet, aged 22 years, was recorded by the 1861 census. She was living in Haddington, with her husband Alexander and their son William. Her birthplace was Haddington. The family lived beside George Haimes, Isabella's brother, and his family.

Isabella Nisbet was recorded by the 1871 census for the St Giles district of Edinburgh, living at 1 Milne Square, with her husband, Alexander, and their five children. Her age was recorded as 32 years and she had been born in Haddington.

The 1881 census for Edinburgh recorded Isabella Nisbet with her husband and children, aged 1 year to 19 years, resident in 5 Brown Street. Isabella's age was noted as 42 years, and she had been born in Haddington, Scotland.

In 1890 Isabella died, just six months after her husband's death. Her death certificate recorded her as the 'widow of Alexander Nisbet ironmoulder', and aged 50 years. Her own parents were deceased.

In the 1921 death certificate of her daughter, Eleanor, Isabella Nisbet was misnamed as 'Mary Nisbet MS Tait'. The informant was Eleanor's son, John McKeen. 7 11

  Research Notes:

THE SURNAME 'HAIMES'

'Haimes' or 'Hames' is said to derive from 'Hamo' or 'Hamon', a Norman personal name from which the surname 'Hammond' is also supposed to derive. If so, it would probably have been introduced into the British isles with the Norman Conquest of 1066. 'Hamo' in turn derives, it is said, from the Germanic given name, 'Haimo', linked to other names beginning with 'haim' meaning 'home'.

There are a number of variant spellings of the surname, for example 'Hames', 'Hams', 'Haymes', 'Hamms', but the final 's' that these forms have in common is said to indicate the name as a patronymic form, that is 'son of..' as in the more English 'Ham(p)son', so: 'Hamo's son'. The first known record of the surname may be that of Thomas del Hames, in 1332, in the "Subsidy Rolls of Cumberland"

The surname is found in the north of England, in a north-south band down the centre of England, in South Wales and in the West Country. In Scotland, it finds itself cornered in the very south east: in Roxburghshire, Midlothian, and in East Lothian. It may be that Isabella Haimes' great grandfather, Richard, came north to Haddington from England in the early part or middle of the 18th century. If so, it is likely that he came from the southern part of England, and that he was known as Richard Ham.

BROWN STREET, EDINBURGH

This street starts beyond Queen's Drive at Holyrood Park and climbs towards The Pleasance.

  Medical Notes:

T. Lyon Wilson LRCP (E) certified the cause of death.

William Nisbet, of 1 Buccleuch Street, son of the deceased, informed the registrar at Edinburgh, H. Murray, on 11 December 1890, of his mother, Isabella Nisbet's death.

Isabella married Alexander Sandilands NISBET (DNA Linked), son of William NISBET and Isabella SANDILANDS, on 10 June 1859 in Haddington, East Lothian, Scotland.1 (Alexander Sandilands NISBET (DNA Linked) was born in 1839 in Edinburgh parish, Edinburgh, Scotland 12 and died 13 June 1890 at 5.15 am in 5 Brown Street, Edinburgh, Scotland.). The cause of his death was diabetes mellitus and apoplexy over 4 days.

  Marriage Notes:

Alexander S. Nisbet, a 20 year old bachelor, of Haddington, married Isabella Hames also unmarried, aged 20 years, and of Haddington, before John Cook DD, minister of Haddington, after banns, according to the forms of the Church of Scotland. The witnesses to the marriage were named in the certificate, but the names were unclear. They may be H. Whitelaw and Rich. Borthwick. Alexander was a moulder by trade.

The marriage was registered at Haddington parish in the county of Haddington on 13 June 1859, Thomas Henderson acting registrar. 1
