In 1841 census recorded "Thomas Twigley", aged 7 years, the second youngest of his family, living at 114 Main Street Anderston, in the Barony parish of Glasgow. Thomas had been born outside the census county where he was recorded living.
In 1851 "Thomas Sweedley" was recorded by the census living with his widowed mother 'Mrs Sweedley' in Chapelyhill, in Hurlford village, in the parish of Riccarton, Ayrshire. He was unmarried, aged 16 years, and had been born in Paisley, Renfrewshire. He worked as a coal miner.
On 2 April 1857 one of the sponsors at the baptism in St Joseph's RC parish Kilmarnock, Ayrshire, of Catharine Quigley and Margaret George was "Thom. Quigley" and was probably this man. The other sponsor was "Cath. Linas".
His daughter Anne was born in the Spring of 1859 when the family were living in Henrietta Street in Galston. Thomas notified the registrar and made his X mark. He was a coal miner.
When his daughter Catherine was born in June 1860 Thomas was coal miner. He was present where the birth took place, and notified the registrar W. Bell at Galston on 6 July 1860, 13 days after the birth, and made his X mark thereto.
The census of 1861 for Tarbolton Ayrshire recorded "Thomas Twildie", his wife Hellen and their daughter Catherine living at 5 Annbank Square. Thomas was a coal miner aged 26 years and had been born in Scotland , the exact place not being recorded with: "n k Scotland". Hellen, aged 26 years, and Catherine aged 9 months were both born in Galston Ayrshire according to the entry.
In 1861, at the time of his son John's birth, Thomas was a coal miner living at, and presumably working in, Holmes Colliery Galston. He notified the registrar of the birth and made his X mark.
It was Thomas who notified the registrar at Galston on the death of his little son, George, in 1865 at the age of ten months. He made his X mark. He was described as a coal miner on the death certificate.
Thomas also made his X mark before William Bell, registrar on 23 December 1865 at Galston when giving notice of the birth of his son Duncan on the 20th of that month.
In the 1871 census Thomas Tweedly was living in Galston, with Michael and Peter, two of his brothers living nearby. He was 34 years old - the same age as given for his brother Michael. Thomas was possibly about 36-37 years of age rather than 34 years. He was living in Low or New Blair Street, at no 15, with his wife and two of his children. He was a coal miner.
When his daughter Helen was born in April 1873 it was Thomas again, still a coal miner, who made his X mark before the registrar in Galston to give notice of her birth. She was born at Blair Street Galston.
In 1877 Thomas became a widower. In his wife Helen's death certificate Thomas' occupation was recorded as coal miner.
In 1881 the census for Dalmellington recorded Thomas and some of his family living there at 59 Lethan Hill. All were using the surname 'Quigley'. Included in the household were Catherine, Euphemia, Helen, James, John, Thomas aged 9 years, and Thomas aged 45 years, head of the household. He was 'widowed', all of the sons and daughters named were unmarried. Thomas' occupation was recorded as 'ironstone miner' and his birthplace was noted as 'Johnstone Renfrewshire'. All others were born in Galston, Ayrshire.
In April 1883 Annie Quigley married James Aird. In her marriage certificate her father was recorded as 'Thomas Tweedley [sic] coal miner'.
At the time of his daughter Catherine's wedding in June 1883 Thomas was a widower. He was recorded in the certificate as having been a coal miner.
John, Thomas' son, married at Coylton in December 1884. Thomas was described then in the marriage certificate as a coal miner.
On 26 March 1889, three 'Tweedlys' of Scottish nationality arrived in New York from Glasgow aboard the vessel Devonia. Two were called Thomas Tweedly and one Ellen Tweedly. The elder Thomas Tweedly gave an age, 45 years, that made his birth year about 1844; the birth year of the younger was about 1871, having given an age of 18 years. Ellen Tweedly was of an age, 16 years, to make her born about 1873. Both of the men were miners by occupation and Ellen was noted as a house servant. The men travelled 'No 4 steerage' and Ellen 'No 2 steerage'.
Annie Aird, the eldest daughter of Thomas Tweedly, died in 1890. Her father was recorded in her death certificate as 'Thomas Tweedly coal miner'.
In 1920 when his son John Tweedie [sic] died, Thomas Tweedie [sic] was recorded in his son's death certificate as a coal miner.
James McCallum, the son of Thomas, died in Aberdeen in 1941. he had dropped the surname Quigley from his name. His father was recorded in the death certificate of James as "Thomas Quigley coal miner (deceased)". 2 3 6 7 8 9 10 12 15 16 17

THE SHIP 'DEVONIA'
The Devonia was in service between 1877 and 1899 and belonged to the Anchor shipping line. It had one funnel and three masts and was 4,270 tons with an iron hull. It was built at Barrow-in-Furness in England.
Its maiden voyage was between Glasgow and New York on 2 June 1877. It took 200 first class passengers, 100 second, and 300 thrid. It was broken up at Hamburg, Germany in 1899. 7

Thomas married Helen BARBOUR, daughter of George BARBOUR and Anne SMITH, on 5 June 1858 in Kilmarnock, Ayrshire, Scotland.1 (Helen BARBOUR was born on 24 February 1836 in Galston, Ayrshire, Scotland 21 22, baptised on 3 March 1836 in Galston, Ayrshire, Scotland and died 27 May 1877 at 4.50 pm in Chapel Lane, Galston, Ayrshire, Scotland 23.). The cause of her death was heart disease of unknown duration.

This date was provided in the birth certificate of James McCallum Quigley, their son, in 1869, but no record of it has yet been found.
