   Cause of her death was anaemia over 2 years, jaundice over 2 months and dropsy over 11 days.5

   Other names for Anne were AIRD, Annie,5 TWEEDLELAY, Ann and TWEEDLY, Annie.6

  General Notes:

Anne was probably named after her grandmother Anne Barbour nee Smith. Her father notified the registrar of her birth and made his X mark. He was a coal miner.

The 1861 census for Galston, Ayrshire recorded a two year old called 'Ann Tweedlelay' or 'Tweedleda' living with Helen/Jean McCallum, a widow aged 75 years in Henrietta Street. Helen/Jean was the head of the household and the child, Ann, was described in the census entry as her great grand daughter. Also present in the household were Helen/Jean McCallum's daughter Helen aged 32 years and son James aged 30 years. This household was next door to that of Ann Barbour, the child's maternal grandmother.

Anne was not listed with her parents in the family entry of the 1871 census.

Annie Aird died in 1890 at the recorded age of 30 years. Her death certificate recorded her as 'Annie Aird married to James Aird foreman over lace workers'. Her mother was deceased at that time. 5 7

Robert Lyon MB CM certified the causes of death.

James Aird, widower who was present where the death occurred, gave notice of his wife's death before the registrar, Allan Jackson, at Newmiln on 3 January 1890. 5


Anne married James AIRD, son of Hugh AIRD and Helen CLELAND, on 13 April 1883 in East Main Street, Darvel, Ayrshire, Scotland.1 (James AIRD was born in 1854 in Darvel, Ayrshire, Scotland 1 2.)


  Marriage Notes:

The marriage took place after banns according to the forms of the Free Church of Scotland. M.G.Easten DD was the officiating minister. The witnesses were Hugh Aird and Elizabeth Hughes.

James Aird was a widower aged 29 years, of East Main Street Darvel. He was a foreman winder in a lace mill. His mother was deceased.

Annie Tweedly was an unmarried woman of 24 years of age, and of the same address as the groom. She was a machinist in a lace mill. Her mother was deceased.

The marriage was registered at Newmilns on April 16 1883, Allan Jackson being the registrar. 1
