General Notes:
Helen was born when her parents had been married almost fifteen years, and her mother had had at least ten other pregnancies. Her father Thomas notified the registrar at Galston of her birth on 23 April 1873 and made his X mark. He was a coal miner.
In 1881 Helen was aged 7 years, according to the census for Dalmellington in Ayrshire, where she was living with her family at 59 Lethan Hill. Her father was a widower and altogether, including Helen, had three sons and three daughters living with him. Helen was the second youngest and a 'scholar'.
On 26 March 1889, three 'Tweedlys' of Scottish nationality arrived in New York form Glasgow aboard the Devonia. Two were called Thomas Tweedly, and one was Ellen Tweedly. The elder Thomas Tweedly was noted as 45 years old, making his birth years about 1844; the younger Thomas was noted as 18 years old, making his year of birth approximately 1871. Ellen Tweedly was recorded as 16 years of age, which would make her birth year about 1873. Both of the men were miners by occupation and Ellen was noted as a house servant. The men travelled 'No 4 steerage' and Ellen 'No 2 steerage'.
The 1900 US Census recorded George Park, his wife Ellen and their two children, 2 year old daughter Ellen and 7 month old William. living in Precinct 18, Jefferson, Alabama. Ellen was recorded as born in April 1874 - her age is noted as 26 years, a miscalculation of the year. She was born in Scotland as were her parents. Ellen's year of immigration to the USA was noted as 1889.
When Ellen was recorded by the 1910 US census for Jefferson county Alabama, she was living with her husband and two daughters in precinct 42. She was recorded as 29 years old and had been married for 13 years. She had had five children of which only two were living. Like her husband and her parents she had been born in Scotland. No occupation was noted for her.
In 1920 the US census for that year recorded George and Ellen Park living in precinct 18 Jefferson Alabama. Ellen was recorded as 43 years old, of Scotch ancestry and "tongue". Her year of immigration this time was noted as 1893 and the year of her naturalisation as 1896. No occupation was noted for her. The couple had two children Grace, aged 11 years, and George, aged 9 years, living with them. Also in the household was Samuel Park, aged 29 years, a half-brother of George.
"Hellen Park" was recorded in 1930 at 56 years old living with her husband George and their two children Grace and George on Bankhead Highway, outside Birmingham Alabama. Like her husband, she was of Scots ancestry and birth and was a naturalised American.
