General Notes:
John's birth certificate of 1861 recorded his family living at Holmes Colliery in Galston. His father Thomas was a coal miner, and it was his father who notified the registrar of John's birth and who made his X mark. John was very likely named after his grandfather John Quigly, a cotton spinner and later a coal miner.
John, aged 9 years, was a scholar in the 1871 census. He was living in Low or New Blair St, Galston with his parents and brother James. His father worked as a coal miner.
In 1881 John was recorded as aged 19 years and an ironstone miner. He was unmarried. He lived with his father and brothers and sisters at 59 Lethan Hill, Dalmellington in Ayrshire.
The birth of John's first child, Thomas, was registered by his father John Quigley as "Thomas Quigley". The birth was registered at Coylton on 17 December 1885, and the father signed the notice. His occupation was noted as coal miner. The marriage of the parents of the child was recorded as "1884 December 31st Coylton".
Hector Dick Quigley's birth was registered by his father John Quigley at Wishaw on 27 March 1890. John signed the notice and gave his occupation as coalminer. The marriage of John and his wife was also noted as "1884 December 31st Coylton".
The 1891 census recorded John Tweedie [sic], his wife Maggie, and their three children living at Burnsides Land in Overtown, Cambusnethan, Lanarkshire, in a dwelling that had two windowed rooms. The head of the household John Tweedie was a coal miner, born in Galston Ayrshire, and aged 28 years.
John Quigley's birth was registered by his father John at Larkhall on 1 April 1897. The father's occupation was coal miner, and he and his wife were married on 31 December 1884 at Coylton.
Helen Barbour Quigley's birth was registered by her father John Quigley at Coylton on 23 December 1898, and the father signed the notice. His occupation was noted as coal miner. The marriage of the parents of the child was recorded as "1884 December 31st Coylton".
In 1901 the census recorded John and his family living at 157 Gordon Street, Camelon, Falkirk. The family were called Tweedie. Living there were John, head of the household, his wife Margaret, three sons Thomas, Andrew and James, and two daughters Sarah and Helen. The children ranged in age from 15 to 4 years. John was recorded as aged 39 years and his wife as 35 years. He was a coal miner. All in the entry were born in Ayrshire, except the two youngest who were born in Larkhall, Lanarkshire. Their home had two rooms with one or more windows.
In John's death certificate of 1920 he was named as John Tweedie. His recorded age was 59 years and his occupation was noted as 'labourer in shipyard'. He had been married to Margaret Dick and his usual residence was recorded, since he died in hospital, as Hamilton Place New Prestwick. Both of his parents, whose surnames were recorded as Tweedie, were deceased.
John was recorded as a coal miner in his son George's birth certificate. 1 2 3 4 5 9 13 14
Research Notes:
NAME CHANGE
This family provides an example of the surname 'Quigley' changing not just to 'Tweedley' but to the even more Scots sounding 'Tweedie'. The name Quigley continued to be used officially, probably because the registrar worked in the registration of births from the marriage certificate of the parents. The father John continued to sign his name as John Quigley. The switch to tweedie seems to have come late in John's life, and at his death the informant chose to use Tweedie as John's surname.
