General Notes:
The baptism records of Ann Feely and her brother Robert have not as yet been found, though baptism records of some of their siblings have.
The birth certificate of Patrick Feely, born in Hamilton in 1865, recorded Robert Feely, his father, as a coal miner. So did the birth certificate of Mary Feely, Robert's daughter, in 1867.
The 1871 census for Hamilton recorded Robert and Mary Feely, and their eight children, living at 3 James Street, in a dwelling with two windowed rooms. The parents and all of the children, bar the three youngest, were born in Ireland. Patrick, Mary and Rose had been born in Hamilton. Robert, head of the household was recorded as 33 years old and by occupation a coal miner.
Robert notified the registrar and made his X mark at his mother's death in 1871. He gave his address as 3 James Street, Hamilton and his mother died at New Wynd in Hamilton. Robert, head of the household, was a coal miner, aged 33 years, and had been born in Ireland. Of his eight children most had been born in Ireland. The three youngest: Patrick aged 5 years, Mary aged 4 years, and Rose aged two years, were born in Hamilton. The youngest child born in Ireland was Ann aged 7 years. This allows us to conclude that the family had come to Hamilton at least five years earlier, but not more than seven years earlier, that is between 1864-1866. It is also an especially useful entry for the Irish born children, in that the birth order of the children is made clear, although we do not have birth dates.
Robert himself died on 1 September 1873, at quarter to six in the morning, at Hamilton Prison. He was 35 years old. His occupation on his death certificate was noted as 'coal miner', before he became a prisoner. His usual residence was Church Street, Hamilton, and although it was noted that he was married, no wife's name was given.
In 1879, Robert's daughter, Catherine, claimed desertion by her husband when she applied for parish relief. She was described as 'daughter of Robert Feely collier dead and Mary Graimes'.
At his son, James's marriage in 1881, Robert was described as a 'coal miner, deceased'.
When his daughter, Catherine, died in 1884, Robert was recorded in her death certificate as 'a coal miner deceased'.
Robert's daughter, Mary, was married to Peter Quigley in July 1889. Robert was described in the marriage certificate as 'coal miner' and was deceased. Mary's mother was noted as 'Mary Feely MS Grimes'.
In 1901, Robert's son, James, made an application for parish relief. His father was recorded as 'Robert Pheeley miner'.
In Mary Quigley's death certificate of 1911, her father, Robert Feely, was recorded as a coal miner and was deceased.
In 1929 came the death of his daughter, Annie, in Paisley. In her death certificate Robert was again recorded as a coal miner, deceased.
In 1930 when Robert's son, James, died, his father was recorded in the death certificate as 'coal hewer deceased'.
In March 1932, when his daughter, Helen, died in Hamilton, her husband Walter Maxwell, the informant of her death, described her parents as both being deceased, and her father, Robert, as having been a 'coal hewer'. The same record of his occupation was noted when his son Robert died in May 1932.
Robert's son, Patrick's death certificate of 1951 recorded his father as 'Robert Feeley coal hewer deceased'. 4 5

Francis Cullen, Robert's brother in law. notified the registrar at Hamilton on 2 September 1873 of Robert's death and made his X mark. His normal address was given as 28 Castle Street.
Noted events in his life were:
1. sponsor at baptism: of Robert Early, 18 February 1872, St Mary's RC Chapel, Hamilton, Lanarkshire, Scotland. 'Robert Feely and Mary Feely' were noted as sponsors in the baptismal record written and signed by Father James Danaher.
Robert married Mary GRIMES, daughter of John GRIMES and Sarah HILLAN, on 3 March 1854 in Shankill RC parish, County Armagh, Ireland.1 2 3 (Mary GRIMES was baptised on 29 June 1836 in Shankill RC parish, County Armagh, Ireland 7 and died 25 January 1898 at 2.00 pm in 92 New Buildings, Tannochside, Lanarkshire, Scotland.). The cause of her death was cerebral embolism lasting 3 days.

A Church Marriage Record (see above) listed by the Irish Family History Foundation online in Armagh Ancestry displays a marriage between Robert Feely and Mary Grimes on 3 March 1854. The town specified for the wife was Lurgan. Both parties were single and both were Roman Catholic. Only the surnames of the fathers of both parties were given: 'Feely' and 'Grimes'. The witnesses to the marriage were Robert Grimes and Margaret Grimes.
Other indications of marriage:
The birth certificate of Patrick Feely, son of Robert and Mary, recorded that the couple were married in 1855 in Lurgan, County Armagh, Ireland.
In 1867, their daughter, Mary Feely's birth certificate recorded the couple's marriage as 1855 Lurgan, County Armagh, Ireland. Mary Feely, mother was the informant.
