In the Church Baptism record (see above) transcribed and made available by the Irish Family History Foundation, Mary Grimes' address was recorded as Cornikimegar. The baptism was a Roman Catholic one that took place in Shankill parish, Lurgan, County Armagh, Ireland. There were two baptismal sponsors named as well as the parents of the child, who were John Grimes and Sarah Hillan. The first was James McCorry and the second, Winfried O'Neill.

When her son Patrick was born in Hamilton in 1865, her daughter Mary in 1867, and then her daughter Rose in 1869, it was Mary Feely, whose maiden surname was recorded as Mary Grimes, who gave notice before the registrar, and made her X mark. In Mary Feely birth certificate of 1867 the date and place of her parents' marriage was noted as "1855 Lurgan Cty Armagh Ireland".

The 1871 census for 3 James Street Hamilton recorded Mary Feely, wife of Robert, living with him and their eight children aged between 2 and 16 years. Mary was recorded as aged 36 years, three years older than her husband, and was Irish born.

In the 1873 death certificate of Robert Feely in Hamilton, no spouse's name was given, although the certificate does state he was married. The informant was Robert's brother in law Francis Cullen. It is odd that a name was not given, unless there was an irregular situation.

In 1879 Mary's daughter Catherine applied to Govan Combination for parish relief. She was described in the report of her application as 'daughter of Robert Feely collier dead and Mary Graimes residing in Hamilton'. Later in the inspector's report, the application described Catherine as 'daughter of Robert Feely dead and Mary Grames living in The Wynd Hamilton'.

In the 1881 census return for Hamilton, Mary Feely was recorded as the head of the household at 20 Church Street Hamilton. She was a widow with 3 sons, 3 daughters, and 2 grandchildren residing there (one of the grandchildren may be Mary Feely, illegitimate daughter born 1875 of Mary Grimes's husband's first cousin Jane Feely of Lesmahagow and her later husband James Fitzpatrick-which see). Mary Feely's age was given as 47 years, and her birthplace was Ireland. Her sons worked as coal miners, and the older childer of the rest of the family were scholars.

In the marriage certificate of Mary's daughter Mary Feely and Peter Quigley, Mary Feely MS Grimes was noted as the bride's mother, with Robert Feely, coal miner, deceased, as her father. The address for the bride was 27 Castle Street.

In the 1891 census for Hamilton, Mary Pheely [sic] was recorded as the head of the household at 21 Castle Street. She was a widow, aged 48 years, with two sons, one daughter, and five grandchildren living with her. The two sons were coal miners, her daughter, Rose, was a millworker, and the eldest of the grandchildren were scholars. Mary again stated she was born in Ireland. The ages quoted seem unreliable and likely to be inaccurate: the ages given in 1891 were not uniformly 10 years older than those quoted for 1881.

Mary Feely died at her home at 92 New Buildings Tannochside, near Uddingston, in Lanarkshire, on 25th January 1898 at 2pm. The certificate stated she was 59 years of age. She was the widow of Robert Feely, coal miner. Her father's name was given as Grahams, but no Christian name was recorded for him. His occupation was described as 'hawker', and he was already deceased. Her mother's name was 'Ann Griffin, formerly.....' a blank, then 'previously Grahams MS McCarthy'. She was deceased.

In 1902 'Mary Grimes' was recorded as the mother of James Pheeley, then applying for parish relief in Glasgow parish.

In her daughter Mary Quigley's death certificate of 1911, Mary senior was called 'Mary Feely, MS Grimes' and was deceased.

Mary's age at any point, and therefore her birth date, is very hard to pin down as she seems to get younger as she got older! This was not necessarily intentional; she may simply have lost track of the passing years, or, more likely, she may have belonged to an oral culture and did not experience the passing of years in a numerical and logical way. 2 6 7 13 15 16 17 18

  Research Notes:

PARENTAGE

There is some uncertainty about Mary's parents' names.

The information from her death certificate is not fully reliable. Her son does not give a Christian name for Mary's father, yet gives some detail fro different surnames of her mother. The names given have not been verified in either Irish or Scottish records. Moreover the legibility of that certificate is poor.

We do know Mary married in Shankill RC parish, and the baptism record given here is the only one for her name in Shankill parish in the years we would expect Mary's birth to have taken place from other evidence. Yet it does not corroborate the names in the death certificate, and these were not offered by Mary herself.

From the records we have, it appears that Mary had a sister Ann, and this may have contributed to the name offered by her son for Mary's mother. 19

  Medical Notes:

The doctor who signed the death certificate was W. Maitland Martin.

Patrick Feely, Mary's son, notified the registrar of the death of his mother and signed the register on 26 January 1898 at Bothwell. 20

Noted events in her life were:

1. sponsor at baptism: of Robert Early, 18 February 1872, St Mary's RC Chapel, Hamilton, Lanarkshire, Scotland. 21

Mary married Robert FEELY, son of Robert FEELY and Rose MAGOWN, on 3 March 1854 in Shankill RC parish, County Armagh, Ireland.1 2 3 (Robert FEELY was born in 1837 in Ireland and died 1 September 1873 at 5.45 am in Hamilton Prison, Hamilton, Lanarkshire, Scotland.)
