In 1871 the census recorded John living with his family at 3 James Street Hamilton. He was 14 years old according to the record and had been born in Ireland. He was a coal miner.
The 1881 census recorded a John Feely living at 20 Church Street, Hamilton, with his mother Mary Grimes, and seven other family members. John was 23 years old, born in Ireland and was employed as a coal miner.
When his sister, Catherine, died, it was John Feely who was the informant of her death before William Potter, registrar, at Hamilton on 15 December 1884
On 9 June 1885 John gave notice at Hamilton of the birth of his son, Robert, before the registrar, John Rae. John gave his own occupation as coal miner, and his marriage date as 13 February 1885. The same procedure was carried out at the birth of his daughter Ellen in 1887 and the same information given. Similarly at the registration of his daughter Catherine the same information was noted.
The 1891 census recorded John and Annie Feely living in Hamilton as a family, with 3 children: Robert (5 years), Ellen (4 years), and Catherine (2 years). Margaret Pheely, living with her grandmother at 21 Castle Street, may also be John's child.
When John died in 1899, his death certificate described him as a coal miner aged 42 years. He was married to Annie McGuire. It notes that he was found in the River Avon, between Ross Bridge and Hamilton Bridge in the parish of Hamilton. His usual residence was 2 Young Street, Hamilton. John's parents were both dead, his mother having died the previous year. The entry in the Register of Corrected Entries adds that John's body was found about 8.00 am on 29 June 1899 in the River Avon, near its junction with the River Clyde. In his investigation into this death as a sudden death, the Procurator Fiscal, Robert Weir, in the result of a precognition dated 6 July 1899, found that the cause of death was drowning, an act of suicide while suffering from delirium caused by the effects of alcohol, 'drink', and this was registered with the original certificate by James Frame, registrar, on 10 July 1899.
John's daughter, Ellen, married in 1918. Her father was recorded in the marriage certificate as 'John Feely coal miner deceased'.
When Ann Feely died in 1928, she was described as 'widow of John Feely coal miner'. 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 13 14

Robert Feely, John's brother, of 54 Viewpark Rows, Bellshill, registered the death with James Fraser, assistant registrar, at Hamilton on June 30 1899. Robert made his X mark.
John's burial was undertaken by William Wallace, Hamilton.
John married Annie McGUIRE, daughter of Patrick McGUIRE and Mary Jane CALDER, on 13 February 1885 in RC Chapel, Hamilton, Lanarkshire, Scotland.1 (Annie McGUIRE was born on 20 April 1856 in Hamilton, Lanarkshire, Scotland 15 and died 27 August 1928 at 9.00 pm in 81 Townhead Street, Hamilton, Lanarkshire, Scotland 9 16.). The cause of her death was cerebral haemorrhage over one month.
Marriage Notes:
John Feely, a coal miner aged 26 years, of 20 Church Street, Hamilton married Ann McGuire aged 28 years, a cotton winder, of 1 Burnbell Place, Hamilton at a Roman Catholic service celebrated by Rev James Danaher RCC. The witnesses were James and Helen McGuire.
Both were unmarried. Each had only one parent living. Ann made her X mark.
