   Cause of her death was bronchitis, asthma and myocardial degeneration over 35 days.

   Other names for Helen were FEELEY, Ellen, FEELEY, Helen, FEELY, Ellen,2 MAXWELL, Ellen,3 4 MAXWELL, Helen, PHEELEY, Ellen,5 PHEELY, Ellen and PHEELY, Helen.6

  General Notes:

Ellen was recorded in the 1881 census with her mother and seven other family members living at 20 Church Street Hamilton. She was 10 years old, had been born in Hamilton, and was a scholar.

"Ellen Feely" was a witness at the marriage of Mary Feely and Peter Quigley in Hamilton in 1889, and was probably this sister of Mary.

In the 1891 census, there was an entry for the dwelling house 'Hillside', in Union Street, Hamilton. This was a house with ten windowed rooms, obviously in an area of business people, the professional middle classes, people living on private means, churchmen and so on. This entry included in it 'Helen Pheely', an unmarried woman aged 19 years, employed as a nursery maid and servant. Her employer was John Beath. He was aged 56 years, and his wife was 33 years old. He was a GP living with his wife and seven children, aged from 2 years to 24 years. Also employed there were a cook and a housemaid, both female. In that entry, Helen Pheely's place of birth was Hamilton, Lanarkshire.

On 31 December 1891, Ellen was a witness at the marriage of her sister, Rose, to Matthew McAleavy in Hamilton.

The 1901 census recorded Ellen Feeley living with her husband and children, and some other Feeley relatives, brothers, Robert and Patrick, and niece, Maggie, at 51 Viewpark Square, Bellshill, Lanarkshire. Her age was noted as 30 years and her birthplace as Hamilton. Next door to her home were living her sister Mary Quigley, Mary's husband, Peter, and their son, Peter.

In 1902, when Helen's brother, James, a widower, applied for parish relief, it was stated that his two dependent daughters, Helen aged 11 years, and Agnes aged 9 years, were in the care of Mrs Walter Maxwell, their aunt, at 57 Muirpark Rows, Uddingston.

Ellen Maxwell was recorded by the 1911 census for Hamilton living in Glasgow Road, Burnbank, with her husband, eight of their children and her brother Patrick. She was 40 years old and had been born in Hamilton. the census also recorded that she had been married for sixteen years and had given birth to ten children, of whom nine were living.

When she died in 1932, 'Helen Maxwell' was described in her death certificate as 'married to Walter Maxwell Variety Artistes Manager'. Her recorded age was 60 years. Both of her parents were by then deceased. 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10

The Hamilton Directory for 1889 does show 'John H. Beith, MD, Hillside' in Union Street Hamilton.

  Medical Notes:

W. B. Crawford Gibson MB ChB certified the causes of Helen's death.

Her widower, Walter Maxwell, who was present where his wife died, gave notice of her death before Nat C. Frew, registrar, at Hamilton on 5 March 1932.


Helen married Walter MAXWELL, son of Samuel MAXWELL and Jane BARR, on 25 October 1895 in RC Chapel, Hamilton, Lanarkshire, Scotland.1 (Walter MAXWELL was born on 27 July 1873 in Hamilton, Lanarkshire, Scotland 11 and died 10 November 1939 at 8.45 pm in 16 Castle Street, Hamilton, Lanarkshire, Scotland 12.). The cause of his death was myocarditis.


  Marriage Notes:

The marriage was celebrated according to the rites and forms of the Roman Catholic Church. Father Peter Donnelly married the couple, and the witnesses were John Maxwell and Marion Barr, possibly Walter's cousin on his mother's side.

Walter Maxwell was a bachelor of 22 years when he married. He lived at 30 Baillies Causeway Hamilton, and worked as a coal miner.

Ellen Feeley was unmarried too and aged 22 years. She lived at 231 Quarry Street Hamilton. No occupation was noted for her.

The marriage was registered at Hamilton on 29 October 1895, W. J. T. Rae registrar. 1
