  General Notes:

Walter Maxwell was 7 years old when recorded living with his parents and siblings at Low Patrick Street, Hamilton in Lanarkshire. He was a "scholar".

The 1891 census for Hamilton, Lanarkshire, recorded Walter Maxwell, a coal miner aged 19 years, living in his parents' household at 11a Watson Street. He was the eldest of seven children and had been born in Hamilton.

In 1896 Walter Maxwell was the informant of his son Samuel's birth at Hamilton. He was described in the birth certificate as a coal miner.

The 1901 census for Bellshill, Lanarkshire recorded Walter Maxwell, his wife and children, and some of his wife's relatives, living at 51 Viewpark Square: Walter, his wife Ellen, their children Samuel, Mary, and Jane, two boarders Robert and Patrick Feeley, his wife's brothers, and another relative, a visitor, Maggie Feeley, natural daughter of Rose, Ellen Maxwell's sister. Walter was the head of the household, recorded as 28 years of age, and worked as a coal hewer. He had been born in Hamilton. Their dwelling had three or more windowed rooms.

The 1911 census for Burnbank, Hamilton, recorded Walter Maxwell, his wife Ellen, their eight children and Ellen's brother Patrick Feeley, living at 323 Glasgow Road. Walter had been born in Hamilton and was recorded as 38 years old. He was a hewer in a coal mine.

Walter was recorded, in his wife's death certificate of 1932, as a 'Variety Artistes Manager'. He was the informant of her death before the registrar at Hamilton. She died at 16 Castle Street Hamilton, which may have been their home.

In his death certificate in 1939 Walter was recorded as a "Cabinet Maker (Master) Widower of Ellen Feeley". He was 66 years old. Both of his parents were deceased. 2 3 4 5 6

S. Maxwell Walter's son, of 114a Cadzow Street Hamilton, who was present where the death occurred, gave notice of his father's death. 2


Walter married Helen FEELY, daughter of Robert FEELY and Mary GRIMES, on 25 October 1895 in RC Chapel, Hamilton, Lanarkshire, Scotland.1 (Helen FEELY was born on 15 May 1871 in Hamilton, Lanarkshire, Scotland and died 4 March 1932 at 4.45 pm in 16 Castle Street, Hamilton, Lanarkshire, Scotland.). The cause of her death was bronchitis, asthma and myocardial degeneration over 35 days.2


  Marriage Notes:

The marriage was celebrated according to the rites and forms of the Roman Catholic Church. Father Peter Donnelly married the couple, and the witnesses were John Maxwell and Marion Barr, possibly Walter's cousin on his mother's side.

Walter Maxwell was a bachelor of 22 years when he married. He lived at 30 Baillies Causeway Hamilton, and worked as a coal miner.

Ellen Feeley was unmarried too and aged 22 years. She lived at 231 Quarry Street Hamilton. No occupation was noted for her.

The marriage was registered at Hamilton on 29 October 1895, W. J. T. Rae registrar. 1
