  General Notes:

The 1871 census for Hamilton records James living at 3 James Street Hamilton within his family. His age was recorded as 12 years and he was a coal miner. He had been born in Ireland.

James Feely was not listed with his birth family in the family entry of the 1881 census. In fact he was resident when the census was taken with his father's sister, Mary Early, and her family at 3 New Wynd, Hamilton. James was a coal mier aged 21 years and was unmarried. He had been born in Ireland.

James' marriage certificate describes him as a coal miner, aged 22 years. His father, Robert, was already dead when James married. James' address was given as 1 New Wynd, Hamilton.

The 1891 census recorded James and Bridget Feely living with their five children at 1 Field Street, Hamilton. James was working as a coal miner. The eldest four children were born in Hamilton and the youngest one in Larkhall.

APPLICATIONS FOR PARISH RELIEF
By way of the Police, James Pheeley applied for parish relief at 12.50 am on 24 August 1902. His residence was noted as the Central Police Office (No 3462).
Biographical details:
He was born in County Armagh, Ireland and was aged 44 years. He was a widower. He was a miner and in religion a Roman Catholic. He was married 22 years earlier at Hamilton by Canon Donnachie. He was partially disabled through an injury to his leg. His parents were Robert Pheeley, a miner, and Mary Grimes, both of whom were dead. His wife, Bridget McLachlan, was 38 years of age. She was born in Airdrie and died five years ago in Bellshill. Her parents were Michael McLachlan, a shoemaker, and Mary Nochar, deceased. He had two daughters dependent: Helen, aged 11 years, born in Larkhall, and Agnes, aged 9 years, and born in Cadzow, Lanarkshire. Both were with their aunt, Mrs Maxwell. She was his sister, Helen, wife of Walter Maxwell, 57 Muirpark Rows, Uddingston.
The circumstances of the application followed:
"Application is made for his removal to the Poorhouse as he was found lying in Bell Street unable to walk with an injured leg and has no friends here able to do anything for him."
There follows then the comment
"Seems a regardless improvident character."
James, the file continues, was previously supported by his own efforts. This claim, on 24 August 1902, was his first claim. The settlement was Ireland. 'To City PH@ signed J. G. Brooks ass. insp. Notices were sent to Hamilton and Bothwell, 29/08/02

When James died in 1930 he was recorded in his death certificate as 'aged 71, formerly a coal hewer, and the widower of Bridget McLaughlin [sic]'. His usual residence was noted as 49 Greendyke Street Glasgow.

James Feeley was recorded as a 'coal miner (deceased)' in the 1939 death certificate of his daughter Mary Jane. 1 2 4 5 6

'Canon Donnachie' was actually Canon Danaher who married James and Bridget in Hamilton in 1881.

David M. Cathie certified the cause of death.

Mary J.Catterson, daughter of the deceased man, of 55 Storie Street Paisley, gave notice of his death before the registrar, William Maclaren, at Glasgow on June 18 1930. 5


James married Bridget McLAUGHLAN, daughter of Michael McLAUGHLAN and Mary Jane NOGHER, on 24 May 1881 in RC Chapel, Hamilton, Lanarkshire, Scotland.1 (Bridget McLAUGHLAN was born on 28 November 1861 in Airdrie, Lanarkshire, Scotland 1 and died before 1902 in Bellshill, Lanarkshire, Scotland.)


  Marriage Notes:

James and Bridget were married by Father James Danaher RCC at Hamilton.
The witnesses were John Duffy and Alice Keenan.
The registrar was William Potter. 1
