  General Notes:

Robert was recorded in the 1841 census. He lived in Airdrie at Aitchison Street, and although only aged between 10 and 14 years was recorded as an iron miner. He was born in Ireland, as were all of his family with whom he lived.

On 29 September 1844, Robert was a sponsor at the baptism of his niece, Mary McGrath, lawful daughter of John and Elizabeth McGrath.

In 1845, he acted as a sponsor at the baptism, in St Margaret's Airdrie, of his nephew, James Cavenagh, the son of his older brother, James.

Robert Cavanagh was a witness at the marriage of Sarah Cavanagh to John Carlin on 27 November 1849 at St Patrick's RC Church, Coatbridge.

In 1851 the census recorded Robert working in Carnbroe as an ironstone miner. He was aged 18 years. He lived in the Ironworks village with his parents, two brothers, his sister Alice, a widow, and his niece, Mary.

When his daughter, Mary, was born in 1855 'Robert Cavenagh' was the informant of the birth. The 1855 birth certificate, more informative than later forms, recorded Robert as an ironstone miner. His age was recorded as 22 years and his birthplace as County Armagh in Ireland. He and his wife married in 1853 in Coatbridge, and they had one son who had died. Robert made his X mark.

Robert Kavanagh and Elizabeth Kavanagh were the sponsors at the baptism of Robert Cavanagh, son of John Cavanagh and Jane Robinson, on 15 July 1855 in St Patrick's Coatbridge.

In 1861 the birth certificate of his son, James, recorded Robert as an iron miner.

Robert was the informant of the birth of his twins Robert and Elizabeth. He made his X mark before the registrar at Holytown on 5 May 1866. His occupation was recorded as ironstone miner.

Robert and his wife and family were recorded by the 1871 census. They were living at 110 Mid Row in the quoad sacra parish of Garturk in Old Monkland - the Rosehall district. Their house had one windowed room. Robert and Martha had seven children, from 2 months of age to 14 years, living with them then. Robert was aged 38 years and was a collier. Both he and his wife were born in Ireland, and the children were born in Scotland.

Robert died in 1872 at the age of 40 years leaving his wife, Martha, a widow. His death certificate noted his occupation as coal miner.

In the marriage certificate of his son, Thomas, in 1879, Robert was recorded as a 'coal miner deceased'. 1 2 9 11 12 13 14 15 16 17

  Medical Notes:

There was no medical attendant at the time of Robert Cavanagh's death according to the death certificate.

Martha, Robert's widow, who had been present where the death occurred, informed James Mitchell, the registrar at Glasgow, on 11 November 1872 of her husband's death and she made her X mark.

Robert married Martha CRAWFORD, daughter of Thomas CRAWFORD and Unknown, on 10 September 1853 in St Patrick's RC Church, Coatbridge, Lanarkshire, Scotland.1 (Martha CRAWFORD was born in 1836 in Clogher, County Tyrone, Ireland and died in 1916 in Dumbarton, Dunbartonshire, Scotland 18.)

  Marriage Notes:

In the 1855 birth certificate of their daughter Mary, Robert and Martha's marriage was recorded as having taken place in Coatbridge in 1853. The marriage place and date of this couple was given in the birth certificate of their son James as Coatbridge, Old Monkland in November 1853.

The couple were married by Father Michael O'Keeffe in the presence of John Cavanagh and Mary Lenton.

The OPRs statement of 31 July 1853 in Bothwell parish as date and place, were most probably the banns of the marriage. 1 19
