CENSUS
In 1770 a census was carried out for the town of Armagh giving individual names and occupations, size of family and religion and is arranged street by street. One entry is for a man called Edward Campbell. He is recorded as being in Market Street, Armagh, and was a shopkeeper. He was a member of the Established Church ie Church of Ireland or Anglican. A note records that his wife kept shop. No other details were recorded.
It is possible that it was this man or someone related to him. We know that Mary Campbell was born before the turn of the 18th century, but can only estimate the age of her parents. Mary was probably born in the middle of the 1790s, but she may have been a younger child of her parents. Her death certificate recorded her father as a farmer, and again we have no way of knowing the accuracy of that - Mary was not there to confirm or contradict it, and that designation was grequently noted for people of Irish descent if not much was known. Many unknown Irish fathers were 'farmers' in such Scottish records. Even if he was a farmer, he could have had a shop from which to market his produce. Or it may have been an uncle or grandfather. 3
Edward married Mary HEFFRON. (Mary HEFFRON was born about 1770 and died before 17 July 1859.)
