CAMPBELL, Mary ^{1 2}

   Cause of her death was old age and debility lasting six months.

   Other names for Mary were CAVANAGH, Mary ¹ and KAVANAGH, Mary.³

  General Notes:

Mary Cavanagh, aged in the 40 to 44 years age range, was recorded in the 1841 census living in Aitchison Street, Airdrie, Lanarkshire, with her husband, Michael, and five of her children aged from 3 years to 20 years plus. She was born in Ireland, as were her husband and children, so she must have come over to Scotland about 1838-39.

On 29 September 1844 a Mary Cavenagh along with Robert Cavenagh were the sponsors at the baptism of Mary McGrath, lawful daughter of John and Elizabeth McGrath, in St Margaret's RC Chapel, Airdrie. It may have been this woman.

In the 1851 census, Mary was recorded as being 55 years of age, one year younger than her husband, Michael. She, and part of her family, were living together at 4 Upper Row of the Carnbroe Ironworks village. Her son, James, and grandson, James, lived in the same village at 15 Upper Row at that time.

In her death certificate of 1859 Mary Cavanagh was recorded as a 'widow of an ironstone miner', but her husband's name was not noted. However, her father was named as Edward Campbell. She was recorded as 68 years old at the time of death. This is about five years older than what we might expect from previous age recordings.

The burial register for Old Dalbeth cemetery shows a burial on 19 July 1859 of Mary Cavanagh aged 62 years, the cause of her death being old age. The cost of the burial was four shillings. This age actually fits more accurately the age profile we have of her from the census entries. ^{3 5}

BURIAL

Mary Cavanagh's burial was most probably in common ground, as no note of 'lair' is mentioned as would have been the practice. The fact that the cost was stated reinforces this conclusion.

No doctor certified the causes of death.

Mary was buried in Dalbeth Cemetery, Glasgow, and this was certified by Robert McIndoe, undertaker.

Mary's son, John Cavanagh, notified the registrar, James Smith, at Glasgow on 18 July 1859. ⁴

1. migration from Ireland To Scotland, 1838-1841. Mary and Michael Cavanagh's youngest child in the 1841 census was aged 3 years and was born in Ireland, according to the 1841 census for Airdrie, Lanarkshire.

Mary married Michael CAVANAGH. (Michael CAVANAGH was born about 1795 in Ireland ^{1 3} and died between 1851 and 1857.)
