CAVANAGH, James ⁵

   Cause of his death was Asthemic bronchitis lasting 14 days.

   Other names for James were CARANS, James,⁸ CAVENAGH, James,⁹ CAVENAUGH, James,¹⁰ CAVENGH, James ⁶ and KAVANAGH, James.

  General Notes:

James Cavengh [sic] was recorded in the 1841 census living with five other young men of his own age in Aitcheson Street in Airdrie in the parish of New Monkland, Lanarkshire. They were all recorded in the age range 20- 24 years. All bar one were born in Ireland. Some were iron miners and some were labourers. Their names were: John McGra, John Donaley, Patrick Fryl, Patt McGinnes, and John Thomson. Also living there were Alexander Thomson, his wife and child. James was an iron miner. His father Michael, was included in the same household, and on the next page were listed his mother and brothers and sisters.

On 1 March 1843 James Cavanagh and Mary Toy were the sponsors at the baptism of Owen McGrath, son of Elizabeth Cavanagh and her husband John McGrath (possibly the same man listed with James in the census return for 1841).

The 1851 census recorded two James Kavanaghs living as lodgers at 15 Upper Row in the Carnbroe Ironworks' village, Lanarkshire, with a family called McIlwraith: Esther aged 50 years, and her sons John aged 24 years, James aged 23 years, and William aged 15 years. The young James Kavanagh was entered as being aged 6 years, and his father, also James, was aged 28 years. All were recorded as having been born in Ireland except young James who was born in Bothwell parish, Lanarkshire. James Kavanagh, father, aged 28 years, was recorded as an 'ironstone miner' and a widower. Two others were coal miners and one was a labourer at furnace. At no 4 Upper Row lived James Kavanagh's parents and a number of his family.

In May 1855 Mary, daughter of Robert Cavanagh and Martha Crawford, was baptized in St Patrick's RC Church, Coatbridge. James Cavanagh and Jane Cavanagh were her godparents.

James' death certificate in 1859 recorded him as having been an iron miner and a married man of 37 years when he died. He died in 'Bogside', in Old Monkland. By then he was married to his second wife, Jane Crow, who made her X mark. Her name is signed by the registrar as Jane Cavanagh.

James' occupation was given on his son's marriage certificate in 1865 as 'iron-miner', and that certificate recorded he was deceased by then. The usual residence of his son was recorded as Dunipace parish.

On his son James' death certificate in 1913, James Cavanagh senior was recorded as a coal miner, already deceased. ^{6 9 11 12}

  Medical Notes:

The cause of death was certified by William Kidd, surgeon, who saw James from the 11th February 1859.

James Cavanagh's burial was certified by William Russell, sexton for Old Monkland parish.

Jane Cavanagh, his second wife, was present. She notified the registrar and made her X mark. This was witnessed by Andrew Baird, registrar on February 14th 1859 at Coatdyke.

James married Mary SMITH on 26 January 1842 in St Margaret's RC Church, Airdrie, Lanarkshire, Scotland.^{1 2} (Mary SMITH was born about 1821 in County Derry, Ireland.)

  Marriage Notes:

The Proclamation of Banns for marriage was recorded by the session clerk in the parish of New Monkland on 26 December 1841 for this couple and it is recorded that 3s 6d was paid.

The record from the marriage register of St Margaret's RC Chapel in Airdrie reads:

"James Cavanagh of County Armagh and Mary Smith County Derry after due proclamation of banns were married by me in the presence of John McGrath and Bess Cavanagh."

and is signed John Ryan (unclear). ²

James next married Jane CROW, daughter of John CROW and Mary BOYLE, on 4 August 1853 in St Patrick's RC Church, Coatbridge, Lanarkshire, Scotland.^{3 4} (Jane CROW was born on 23 March 1828, baptised on 6 April 1828 in Dundonald Parish, Ayrshire, Scotland ¹⁰ and died 4 January 1904 at 7.00 pm in Pilot Acre, Blantyre, Lanarkshire, Scotland ¹³.). The cause of her death was chronic bronchitis over 12 months, apoplexy over 2 days, and cardiac failure of 1 day.

  Marriage Notes:

In the Old Parish Register of Bothwell parish for 1853, both James and Jane were recorded as 'both of this parish'.

The date and place given by the IGI of 10 July 1853 in Bothwell parish, Lanarkshire, Scotland was most probably the banns of marriage.

The extract from the marriage register of St Patrick's RC parish Coatbridge written and signed in the hand of the parish priest who married the couple reads as follows:
'4 August 1853
James Cavanagh and Jane Crow were after due proclamation of banns married by me in the presence of Bernard McCartney and Mary McMullen
