CAVANAGH, James ^{3 4}

   Cause of his death was Bronchitis; myocarditis and cardiac failure.

   Other names for James were CAVENAGH, James and KAVANAGH, James.

  General Notes:

The record of his baptism in St Margaret's RC Parish, Airdrie, Lanarkshire, notes the date of James' birth and baptism but not his place of birth. His baptismal sponsors were Robert Cavenagh and Mary Cavenagh. Robert was probably his uncle, his father's younger brother; Mary Cavenagh may just possibly be his grandmother. The priest who baptised him was Father Alex Smith.

The 1851 census recorded two James Kavanaghs living as lodgers at 15 Upper Row in the Carnbroe Ironworks village with a family called McIlwraith: Esther aged 50 years, and her sons John aged 24 years, James aged 23 years, and William aged 15 years. The younger of the two James Kavanaghs was recorded as being aged 6 years old and his father, also James, was aged 28 years. All in the household were born in Ireland, except for the younger James, who was born in Bothwell parish.

James made his X mark at the registration of his son Patrick's birth in 1868. He was recorded then as a coal miner. Patrick's birth was registered in the district of Holytown, parish of Bothwell.

In 1870 when his daughter Mary was born, James Cavanagh notified the registrar, Andrew Baird, at Coatdyke, on 4 July 1870, and made his X mark. His occupation was recorded as coal miner.

The 1871 census recorded James and Catherine Cavanagh living in 44 Greenend of Calder, in the parish of Garturk in Old Monkland. The house had one room with a window. The couple had two children, Patrick and Mary. James was recorded as being aged 25 years, a miner, and born in the parish of Bothwell.

In 1872 John Cavanagh, son of James and Catherine, was born. James, who had been present where the birth took place, was the informant before the registrar at Coatdyke, and made his X mark. John's birth certificate recorded James as a coal miner.

James, who had been present where both occurred, was the informant of the death of Catherine, his 7 month old baby, on 24 November 1874, and then of John, his 2 year old son, from scarlet fever, on 27 November 1874. He made his X mark for both. He was recorded as being a coal miner at that time.

James made his X mark at his daughter, Elizabeth's birth in 1875. His occupation then was recorded as coal miner.

The 1881 census for the parish of Bothwell, quoad sacra Holytown, recorded the Cavanagh family living at number 15 New Row, Thankerton. The parents, James and Catherine, were 33 and 31 years old respectively. The children were Patrick, aged 13 years, Mary, aged 10 years, and Elizabeth, aged 5 years. Patrick and his father were coal miners. They were registered as having been born in Bothwell parish. Catherine was born in Airdrie, and Mary and Elizabeth in Old Monkland.

In 1889 James' daughter, Mary Cavanagh, married John Kelly. James was noted in their marriage lines as a coal miner.

The 1891 census for Blantyre recorded James Cavanagh living at 29 Hall Street, with wife, Catherine, and son, Patrick. He was aged 43 years and was working as a coal miner. Their house had two rooms with a window. He was born in Bothwell parish.

In 1901 the census for Blantyre recorded James and Catherine Cavanagh living in Lindsays Buildings, Stonefield Road, Blantyre. With them lived Francis Torley, a boarder, their nephew probably, the son of Catherine' sister Elizabeth. James was recorded as aged 54 years and a coal miner. His birthplace was noted as Bothwell parish. The dwelling in which they lived had two windowed rooms.

In his wife, Catherine's death certificate in 1909, James Cavanagh was, as always, recorded as a coal miner. Similarly, in 1911, in that of his daughter, Elizabeth, whom he outlived.

James died on 1 August 1913, in Blantyre, and his death certificate recorded him as a coal miner and widower of Catherine McInerney. He was recorded as living at 5 Stonefield Road and aged 63 years at the time of his death. This , we now know from the date of his birth and baptism, is not quite accurate, thoughthe inaccuracy was not unusual for those times. When he died in 1913, he was in fact in the 68th year of his life, and would have celebrated his 68th birthday in under three months.

In 1951 James Cavanagh's daughter, Mary, died in Blantyre. In her death certificate, James was recorded as 'James Cavanagh coal miner deceased'.

In his son Patrick's death certificate of 1957 he was described as 'a coal hewer deceased'. ^{8 9 10 11 12 13 14 15 16 17}

James' death was notified to the registrar by Patrick Cavanagh, son of the deceased, on 1 August at Blantyre. Patrick was able to sign his name in the register.

James married Catherine McINERNEY, daughter of Patrick McNERNEY and Catherine McCONVILL, on 24 November 1865 in St Margaret's RC Church, Airdrie, Lanarkshire, Scotland.^{1 2} (Catherine McINERNEY was born on 3 February 1849 in Airdrie, Lanarkshire, Scotland ^{5 18 19 20}, baptised on 13 February 1849 in St Margaret's RC Church, Airdrie, Lanarkshire, Scotland ²⁰ and died 29 March 1909 at 3.05am in 5 Stonefield Road, Blantyre, Lanarkshire, Scotland ²¹.). The cause of her death was heart disease of six months' duration.

  Marriage Notes:

The marriage took place in St Margaret's RC Church in Airdrie and was celebrated according to the rites and forms of the Roman Catholic Church, The celebrant was Father Michael O'Keeffe CC. The witnesses were John Owens & Ellen Tippen.

James Cavanagh, the groom was aged 18 years at the time of the wedding, and his occupation was that of iron miner. His usual residence was in Dunipace parish, Stirlingshire. Both of his parents were deceased at the time of his marriage.

The bride, Catherine, was aged 16 years and her occupation was 'factory hand'. She was usually resident in Coatdyke, in the parish of Old Monkland.

The marriage was registered in the Middle district of Old Monkland. ²²
