The 1871 census recorded James and Catherine Cavanagh living in no. 44 Greenend of Calder in Garturk in the parish of Old Monkland. The house had one room with a window. The couple had two children, Patrick and Mary. Mary was aged 9 months and had been born in Old Monkland.

The 1881 census for the parish of Bothwell recorded the Cavanagh family living at 15 New Row, Thankerton. The parents, James and Catherine, were 33 years and 31 years old respectively. The children were Patrick, 13 years, Mary, 10 years, and Elizabeth aged 5 years. Patrick and his father were coal miners. They were born in Bothwell parish, Catherine in Airdrie, and Mary and Elizabeth in Old Monkland.

In the 1891 census Mary was recorded as Mary Kelly, the wife of John Kelly, coal miner. She lived at Annfield Place with her husband and her little daughter, Catherine. Mary's age was recorded as 20 years and her birthplace as Old Monkland.

In the 1901 census, where she and her family were recorded living in High Blantyre, Mary Kelly was recorded as aged 36 years, and born in Old Monkland. In fact she was not yet 31!

Mary Kelly nee Cavanagh, widow of John Kelly coal hewer, died in Blantyre in 1951 at the recorded age of 81 years. Her parents were of course both deceased. 2 10 12

Mary married John KELLY, son of Peter KELLY and Ann McGUIRE, on 7 June 1889 in St Joseph's RC Chapel, Blantyre, Lanarkshire, Scotland.1 (John KELLY was born on 28 April 1866 in Tempo, County Fermanagh, Ireland 13 14 and died 14 November 1939 at 5.00 am in 12 Small Crescent, Blantyre, Lanarkshire, Scotland 15.). The cause of his death was cardiac disease over 1 year and influenza over 14 days.


  Marriage Notes:

The marriage was a Roman Catholic marriage, after banns, solemnised by Father Thomas Hackett. The witnesses were James McBride and Lizzie Higgins. It was registered at Blantyre, on 10 June 1889, George Harris being the registrar.

John Kelly, the groom, was a bachelor aged 21 years. His place of residence was Cemetery Walk, Blantyre, and his occupation coal miner.

Mary Cavanagh was an 18 years old unmarried woman, a cotton factory weaver, whose address was 29 Hall Street, Blantyre. 1
