The 1891 census for Annfield Place, Blantyre, recorded John Kelly, his wife Mary, and their baby daughter Catherine living there. John Kelly, the head of the household, was a married man of 24 years and employed as a coal miner. His birthplace was Ireland.

In 1901 the census recorded the Kelly family living in High Blantyre. John and Mary Kelly lived together with their five children in a dwelling that had but one windowed room. John Kelly's age was noted as 34 years and his birthplace as Ireland. He worked as a coal miner.

When John Kelly died in 1939 his death certificate recorded him as a coal hewer, aged 73 years, and married to Mary Cavanagh. Both of his parents were deceased. The same occupation was recorded for him in the death certificate of his daughter Mary in 1940.

When his son Peter died in 1963, and daughter Elizabeth in 1975, his daughter Bridget in 1976, his daughter Catherine in 1977, his son James in 1983, his daughter Ann in 1988, and his son Francis in 1991, John Kelly was recorded as a coal miner, deceased. 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 14

Michael Harkin MB ChB certified the causes of death.

John Kelly's son, James Kelly, who had been present where the death occurred, gave notice of his father's death before the registrar, J. Barr, at Blantyre, on 14 November 1939. The informant's address was noted as 64 Kilnside Road, Paisley.


John married Mary CAVANAGH, daughter of James CAVANAGH and Catherine McINERNEY, on 7 June 1889 in St Joseph's RC Chapel, Blantyre, Lanarkshire, Scotland.1 (Mary CAVANAGH was born 26 June 1870 at 11.30 am in Locks Row, Greenend of Calder, Old Monkland Parish, Lanarkshire, Scotland, baptised on 8 July 1870 in St Patrick's RC parish, Coatbridge, Lanarkshire, Scotland 15 and died 5 December 1951 at 9.40 am in 12 Small Crescent, Blantyre, Lanarkshire, Scotland 16.). The cause of her death was cerebral haemorrhage over 4 days.


  Marriage Notes:

The marriage was a Roman Catholic marriage, after banns, solemnised by Father Thomas Hackett. The witnesses were James McBride and Lizzie Higgins. It was registered at Blantyre, on 10 June 1889, George Harris being the registrar.

John Kelly, the groom, was a bachelor aged 21 years. His place of residence was Cemetery Walk, Blantyre, and his occupation coal miner.

Mary Cavanagh was an 18 years old unmarried woman, a cotton factory weaver, whose address was 29 Hall Street, Blantyre. 1
