Other names for Elizabeth were CAVANAGH, Eliza, LYNCH, E.,2 LYNCH, Elizabeth 1 2 5 and LYNCH, Lizzie.

  General Notes:

Elizabeth's birth was registered in the Eastern District of Old Monkland parish. On October 5th, James Cavanagh, her father, made his X mark to register the birth. He was a coal miner.

No baptismal record has been found at all as yet in the Roman Catholic records. If Elizabeth was baptised as the rest of her siblings were in St Patrick's Coatbridge, then there may have been a clerical error. The page for that period when she was born and after is uncharacteristically untidy and confused, with added entries slotted in between lines after recordings have already been made, and the sequence of dates is not as regular as usual. This could account for the omission. Or, there may be some other reason.

The 1881 census for the parish of Bothwell recorded the Cavanagh family living at number 15 New Row, Thankerton. The parents, James and Catherine, were 33 and 31 years old respectively. Their children were Patrick, 13 years, Mary, 10 years, and Elizabeth aged 5 years. Patrick and his father were coal miners. The two men had been born in Bothwell parish, Catherine was born in Airdrie, and Mary and Elizabeth in Old Monkland.

The 1891 census recorded Elizabeth working for the Williamsons at Craighead Farm in Blantyre. William and Jane Williamson were aged 27 and 29 yrs respectively.

Elizabeth was 15 years 9 months and 18 days old when she married James Lynch in July 1891. She was a farm servant. Both of her parents were still alive when she married.

Elizabeth signed 'E. Lynch' after giving notice of her daughter, Catherine's birth in 1893. She informed the registrar, George Harris, at Blantyre on 1 April 1893, of her daughter's birth.

In 1894 Elizabeth signed her name as "E. Lynch" on her daughter Alice's birth certificate when notifying the registrar of the birth.

'Lizzie Lynch' was recorded living with her husband and family at 69 Dixon Street Blantyre by the 1901 census. She was recorded as 25 years of age and her birthplace as Old Monkland parish, Lanarkshire. She had four children ranging in age from 8 years to 1 year.

Elizabeth died at the early age of 33 years in 1911. Her own mother was dead by then, but her father was still alive. 2 4 6 7 8

  Research Notes:

BLANTYRE CATHOLICS

James Lynch and Elizabeth Cavanagh were married in Hamilton because Blantyre did not have a custom built RC Church. Its own large Catholic church, St Joseph's, was not built for another ten or fifteen years, about 1905.

There was some provision before then for the Catholics of Blantyre. A block in Hall St, Blantyre, housed the first post-reformation Catholic church in Blantyre. It served the need to provide for the Catholic immigrant workers there, mainly, but not exclusively, Irish, that poured into the area as, first the textile, and then the coal industries developed. Later on, when a more permanent school and church arrangement was available, the block reverted to being four single end houses. 9

  Medical Notes:

William Grant MD certified the cause of death.

James Lynch, Elizabeth's widower, who was present where her death occurred, notified the registrar at Blantyre, James Brown, on 9 January 1911.

Elizabeth married James LYNCH (DNA Linked), son of James LYNCH and Alice SOMERS, on 17 July 1891 in St Mary's RC Parish, Hamilton, Lanarkshire, Scotland. (James LYNCH (DNA Linked) was born 1 January 1870 at 4.00 am in Barrhead, Renfrewshire, Scotland 10, baptised on 4 February 1870 in St Mary's RC Chapel, Hamilton, Lanarkshire, Scotland, died on 24 June 1929 in Mountain Range, Woonona, Bulli Shire, New South Wales, Australia 11 and was buried on 26 June 1929 in Roman Catholic Cemetery, Bulli, New South Wales, Australia 11.). The cause of his death was chronic myocarditis over 3 years and cardiac syncope with immediate effect.

  Marriage Notes:

The marriage was celebrated after banns, according to the rites and forms of the Roman Catholic Church. The celebrant was Father Peter Donnelly. The witnesses were Patrick Cavanagh and Jane Kelly. Both signed the register.

The groom, James Lynch, was aged 21 years and the bride, Elizabeth, or Lizzie, Cavanagh, was aged 15 years at marriage. James was a coal miner and resided at Auchentibber, Blantyre.

Elizabeth worked as a farm servant at Craighead Farm, between Bothwell and Blantyre, her employers being William and Jane Williamson. The farmhouse had six rooms that had one or more windows. Elizabeth's usual residence was noted as 29 Hall Street Blantyre.
