The 1871 census for Allanton Colliery Hamilton recorded James Lynch, the youngest of his family, one year old. He had been born in Barrhead, Renfrewshire.

James was recorded in the 1881 census living at 2 Eddlewood Road Hamilton. He was born in Neilston, Renfrewshire. His age was 12 years and he was a 'scholar'. He had an older brother and a younger brother and two younger sisters.

When he was married in 1891, James gave his usual residence as Auchentibber, Blantyre.

He notified the registrar and signed the register at Blantyre at the birth of his daughter, Agnes, in 1892. He was aged 22 years and was a coal miner. Sadly, Agnes died after only a few hours, and again it was her father who notified the registrar.

In 1893, when Catherine, his daughter, was born at McAlpine's Land, Auchenraith, Blantyre, James was described in her birth certificate as a coal miner.

It was his wife "E. Lynch" who was the informant of their daughter Alice's birth in Blantyre in 1894. James Lynch was recorded as a coal miner.

In 1898, James notified the registrar, Hugh McMillan, on 7 May, of the birth of his namesake, James. He was recorded as a coal miner.

The 1901 census recorded James Lynch as aged 29 years. He lived in Blantyre with his wife and four children. He worked as a coal miner and had been born in Barrhead, Renfrewshire. He and his wife had two sons and two daughters living with them in a dwelling with one windowed room at 69 Dixon Street, Blantyre.

In 1903 James gave notice of the birth of his son, Daniel. His occupation was noted in Daniel's birth certificate as coal miner.

He also notified the registrar and signed the register at the birth of his daughter, Elizabeth, in 1905, and at her death eight months later.

His daughter, Catherine, married on Hogmanay 1910. James was recorded as a coal miner.

In 1911 James became a widower when his wife died, aged only 33 years. It was he who informed the registrar. On her death certificate James' occupation was recorded as coal miner. This designation was also inscribed on the marriage certificate of his daughter, Catherine, registered in the January of that year.

The 1911 census for Blantyre recorded James Lynch, a widower, living in a dwelling with one windowed room at 69 Dixon Street with four children aged from 7 years to 16 years. James was aged 40 years and had been born in Barrhead Renfrewshire. He was a coal miner and worked as a hewer in the pit. The family lived a few doors down from Daniel Lynch, brother of James, and his family, some of whom appear on the same census page.

In the marriage certificate of his daughter Alice to Peter Quigley in 1918, James Lynch was recorded as a coal miner. His wife Elizabeth Lynch was deceased.

In the marriage certificate of his son, Daniel, in 1925, James was noted as a miner.

James died in Australia in 1929. His death certificate from New South Wales recorded him as aged 58 years, born in Barrhead, Scotland, and a miner. He had been in New South Wales for six years. He was recorded as having been married to Elizabeth Cavanagh in Blantyre, Scotland at the age of 18 years. This was just one of the errors in the certificate: James was born in 1870 and married his wife in 1891. His children were listed as Catherine, 36 years, Alice, 33 years, James, 32 years, Andrew, 29 years, Daniel, 27 years, and 'one male deceased'. In fact, this couple lost two children as babies: Agnes, their first child, and Elizabeth their last child, both females. The most serious error of all, though all were understandable, made by Andrew Lynch, the informant, was in the name of the mother of James Lynch. The certificate noted her name as Catherine Dowds. Alice Somers, or Summers, was the mother of James Lynch, and her mother, the grandmother of James Lynch, was Agnes Dowd or Dowds. Moreover, the children did have a grandmother named Catherine: their mother's mother was Catherine Cavanagh, maiden surname McInairnie. AUCHENTIBBER, BLANTYRE, LANARKSHIRE

Auchentibber was in enumeration district 1 of the 1891 census. One boundary was Dykehead to Rotten Burn. It included the parish manse and the parish church, Auchentibber, Calderside, Hartfield, Priestfield Terrace, and a number of farmhouses and mansion houses of Erechhall.

  Medical Notes:

The medical attendant who certified the causes of death was Francis C. Crossle (Registered) who last saw James Lynch on 18 June 1929.

The informant was A. Lynch, son of the deceased, of 153 Walker Street, North Sydney.

The death was registered at Bulli on 25 June 1929 before S. Maclean, registrar.

James was buried in the Roman Catholic Section of the General Cemetery, Bulli, on 26 June 1929. The undertaker was W. J. Williams. The Roman Catholic celebrant was P. J. Power. The witnesses were Hugh Cunningham and D. Lynch. ³

James married Elizabeth CAVANAGH (DNA Linked), daughter of James CAVANAGH and Catherine McINERNEY, on 17 July 1891 in St Mary's RC Parish, Hamilton, Lanarkshire, Scotland. (Elizabeth CAVANAGH (DNA Linked) was born 29 September 1875 at 11.00 pm in 44 Greenend of Calder, Old Monkland, Lanarkshire, Scotland ¹⁵ and died 8 January 1911 at 3.00 pm in 69 Dixon Street, Blantyre, Lanarkshire, Scotland ⁴.). The cause of her death was pulmonary tuberculosis of six months' duration.

  Marriage Notes:

The marriage was celebrated after banns, according to the rites and forms of the Roman Catholic Church. The celebrant was Father Peter Donnelly. The witnesses were Patrick Cavanagh and Jane Kelly. Both signed the register.

The groom, James Lynch, was aged 21 years and the bride, Elizabeth, or Lizzie, Cavanagh, was aged 15 years at marriage. James was a coal miner and resided at Auchentibber, Blantyre.

Elizabeth worked as a farm servant at Craighead Farm, between Bothwell and Blantyre, her employers being William and Jane Williamson. The farmhouse had six rooms that had one or more windows. Elizabeth's usual residence was noted as 29 Hall Street Blantyre.
