LYNCH, James ^{1 2}

   Cause of his death was broncho-pneumonia.

  General Notes:

The 1861 census recorded James Lynch living in the village of Nitshill, in the parish of Abbey Landward, Paisley. He was aged 22 years, unmarried and worked as a coal miner. He was born in Ireland. The house had one room only that was windowed.

James Lynch was the father of a child called Agnes, by Alice Somers, in 1863, before their marriage.

When he registered the birth of his son, Daniel, in 1867, James described himself as a coal miner, and he signed his name.

The 1871 census for Hamilton recorded James Lynch as a married man and head of the household at number 7 Allanton Colliery. He was a coalminer, aged 31 years, and had been born in County Donegal, Ireland.

When he registered his father's death in 1874, James Lynch gave his usual residence as Allanton, Hamilton, Lanarkshire.

In 1877 James Lynch, who was present where the death occurred, gave notice of the death of his daughter Alice, aged 10 months, in Hamilton. He was a coal miner.

James was the informant of his daughter, Alice's birth in 1879. He gave notice before the registrar at Hamilton, William Moffat, on 16 June 1879, and signed the register. His occupation was noted as that of coal miner.

The 1881 census for Hamilton recorded James Lynch living at 2 Eddlewood Road. He had five children at home then, Daniel, aged 15 years, James, aged 12 years, Mary, aged 10 years, Andrew, aged 6 years, and Alice, aged 2 years. He, himself, was a coal miner, aged 40 years, and had been born in Ireland.

In May of 1882, Agnes Lynch, eldest daughter of James and Alice, died, in her teens, in Glasgow Royal Infirmary. James notified the registrar of her death.

James Lynch died in 1885 at 46 Queen Street, Blantyre. He was a coal miner. He was recorded at death as 41 years old. The burial register of St Peter's Cemetery Dalbeth records that James Lynch, aged 41 years, was buried in common ground on 3 September 1885, ten shillings being the fee paid.

At time of his son, James' wedding in 1891 James Lynch was recorded as a coal miner, deceased.

James' son Daniel Lynch married in February 1898. Both James and his wife Alice were deceased then. James was recorded as a coal miner on Daniel's marriage certificate. Andrew Lynch also married in that year, in July, and the same facts were recorded. When these two sons died, well into the twentieth century, James Lynch was recorded as a 'coal hewer' in their death certificates. Alice Lynch, too, married in 1898, in November. In her marriage certificate was recorded what had appeared on those of her brothers: that her father James was a coal miner and was deceased, and her mother Alice too was deceased.

Alice Lynch died in 1934 and her father, James, was recorded in her death certificate as 'James Lynch coal hewer deceased'. ^{4 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 13 14}

  Medical Notes:

James' widow, Alice, notified the registrar at Blantyre of his death on 2 September 1885.

The doctor who certified the cause of death was William Grant.

James married Alice SOMERS, daughter of James SOMERS and Agnes DOUD, on 11 July 1866 in St John's RC Church, Barrhead, Renfrewshire, Scotland.¹ (Alice SOMERS was born in 1842 in County Sligo, Ireland,^{4 17} died 6 July 1891 at 9.30 am in Caledonian Railway, Lodge Avenue, Blantyre, Lanarkshire, Scotland and was buried in 1891 in St Joseph's Cemetery, Dalbeth, Glasgow, Scotland.). The cause of her death was accidental running over by train from which death was instantaneous.

  Marriage Notes:

The marriage was celebrated after banns according to the rites and forms of the Roman Catholic Church. The celebrant was Father Thomas Keane of St John's RC Parish Barrhead. The witnesses were John Mulrooney and Sara Boyd and both made their X mark.

James Lynch was aged 26 years and he was a coal miner. He was usually resident in Nitshill, a village in the Abbey Landward Parish of Paisley. He signed his name. His father was a 'pit head man'.

Alice was aged 24 years and worked as a millworker. She was usually resident in Nitshill, Abbey Parish. She made her X mark. Her father was deceased at the time of the marriage and recorded as a 'labourer'.

The marriage was registered on 14 July 1866 in the District of Abbey Landward in the County of Renfrew.

In the birth certificate of their daughter Alice in 1879 this couple's marriage date was recorded as 2 July 1866 at Barrhead. ¹
