LYNCH, Agnes 1 2

  • Born: 24 September 1863 at 6.50 am, Barrhead, Renfrewshire, Scotland 3 4
  • Died: 25 May 1882 at 11.00 am, Royal Infirmary, Glasgow, Scotland 1

Cause of her death was malignant disease of the femur.

Another name for Agnes was SUMMERS, Agnes Lynch.

  General Notes:

Agnes was born before her parents married. Her name suggests that she was acknowledged by James Lynch as his child. Her mother was described as a mill worker, and when registering the birth, made her X mark. The birth was registered on 8 October 1863, about a fortnight after the birth. Agnes was probably named after her mother's mother, Agnes Dowds.

The 1871 census for Allanton Colliery, Hamilton, recorded Agnes Lynch as the oldest child of three, living with her parents. She was 7 years of age and had been born in Barrhead, Renfrewshire.

Agnes was not included in the family list of James Lynch and Agnes Somers in the 1881 census, when the family were living at 2 Eddlewood Road, Hamilton.

However, she was listed in an 1881 census entry for Neilston, Renfrewshire. She lived with her grandmother, her aunt Ann Summers, and three boarders, at Main Street, Young's Land, in Neilston, Renfrewshire. She was listed as the grand daughter of Agnes Summers, the head of the household. She was a bleachfield worker, aged 17 years, and had been born in Barrhead, Renfrewshire.

When Agnes died in May 1882 her death certificate recorded her as a single woman of 17 years of age. She was, in fact, nearly 20 years of age. Her usual residence was noted as Eddlewood, Hamilton.. 1 2 5

  Medical Notes:

William Malowen MD certified the cause of death.

James Lynch, the girl's father, gave notice of her death before Jos. Alex. Ferguson, registrar, at Glasgow on 26 May 1882. 1
