  General Notes:

Alice Lynch was born at McAlpine's Land, Auchenraith, Blantyre. Her father was a coal miner. Her mother notified the registrar of her birth and signed the register on 3 December 1894 as "E. Lynch"..

The 1901 census for Blantyre recorded Alice Lynch, aged 6 years and living with her parents and siblings at 69 Dixon Street. Blantyre was her birthplace.

The 1911 census for Blantyre recorded James Lynch, a widower, living in a dwelling with one windowed room at 69 Dixon Street with four children aged from 7 years to 16 years. Alice Lynch was the eldest child living with him and was 16 years old and born in Blantyre. She was the only female in the household. She was recorded as a worker at the coal pit. She was a brasspicker.

At her marriage in 1918, Alice's residence was noted as 69 Dixon Street, Blantyre.

Other residences recorded in her married life were

117A Roman Road, Motherwell (1932-35),
4 Paterson Street, Motherwell (1936-39), and
90 Muirhouse Avenue, Motherwell, where she lived until she died.

Alice's husband, Peter Quigley, was a coal miner as her father had been, and she was widowed about the age of 50 years. Alice Quigley was the informant of her husband's death.

She was aged 88 years, coming up for 89 years, at the time of her death. 3 6 7 8

  Research Notes:

AUCHENRAITH

In the 1891 census Auchenraith Colliery was part of enumeration district 2 which was described as

"commencing at the centre of Saunders Loan Parish Road at its junction with Back Priestfield Parish Road, east to Park Burn Bridge, then north to the point opposite March Fence south of Springfield village". It then ran west to the Strathaven Branch of the Caledonian Railway, cemetery walk, Thornpike Road and the junction with Backpriestfield Road. It comprises McAlpine Land, Auchinraith, the Rows at Auchinraith Colliery, Gardiner Place and Terrace, and Cemetery Walk.

BRASSPICKER

When Alice was 16 years old she had a job at the pit as a brasspicker. Google offers by way of exploration and explanation of this term:
"Brasses. Iron pyrites. A brass-like, hard substance occurring in coal. One of the causes of 'heating' or 'spontaneous combustion' in 'waste' or 'gobs'.
Brassey coal. Coal containing golden specks of iron pyrites.
Brasso coal. (Scots.) See Brassey coal."
Iron Pyrites or 'Fools Gold' was the 'brass' that was being picked. It is quite volatile and necessarily removed before sale, unlike coal which heats and burns predictably. It was typically a task for a woman. 9

  Medical Notes:

The doctor certifying the cause of Alice Lynch's death was H. I. Atrah. The term used for the cause of her death does not seem to be a medical description of her condition.

The informant of her death to the registrar was her son Andrew Quigley who signed the register.

Alice married Peter QUIGLEY, son of Peter QUIGLEY and Mary FEELY, on 22 February 1918 in St Joseph's RC Chapel, Blantyre, Lanarkshire, Scotland.1 (Peter QUIGLEY was born 28 August 1891 at 9.00pm in 27 Castle Street, Hamilton, Lanarkshire, Scotland 10, baptised on 6 September 1891 in St Mary's RC Church, Hamilton, Lanarkshire, Scotland 11 and died 20 January 1945 at 6.30 am in Royal Infirmary, Glasgow, Scotland 6.). The cause of his death was gastric ulcer, haemateuresis and anaemia.

  Marriage Notes:

The marriage took place according to the rites and forms of the Roman Catholic Church. The priest officiating was Father Thomas Hackett. The witnesses were Robert Shaw and Agnes Lynch both of whom signed the register.

The groom, Peter Quigley, was a bachelor of 26 years of age. He worked as a coal miner. He gave his address as 71 High Blantyre Road Hamilton. Peter made his X mark in the register.

Alice, the bride, was an unmarried woman of 22 years. No occupation was given for her. She lived at 69 Dixon Street Blantyre. She signed the register.

The mothers of both the bride and the groom were dead at the time of the marriage. The fathers of both were coal miners, and both were still living.

The marriage was registered at Blantyre on 26 February 1918.
