The 1871 census recorded James and Catherine Cavanagh living in 44 Greenend of Calder, in the parish of Garturk in Old Monkland. The house had one room with a window. They had two children, Patrick and Mary. Patrick was 3 years old and was recorded as having been born in Old Monkland.
The 1881 census for the parish of Bothwell recorded the Cavanagh family living at 15 New Row, Thankerton. The parents, James and Catherine, were 33 years and 31 years respectively. The children were Patrick, 13 years, Mary, 10 years, and Elizabeth aged 5 years. Patrick and his father were coal miners. They were recorded as having been born in Bothwell parish, Catherine had been born in Airdrie, and Mary and Elizabeth in Old Monkland.
The 1891 census recorded Patrick living in Blantyre, at 29 Hall St, with his parents and one boarder. Patrick's age was noted as 22 years, and he worked as a coal miner. He had been born in Bothwell parish.
Patrick Cavanagh was a witness at the marriage of his sister, Elizabeth, to James Lynch in July 1891.
In 1896 Patrick Cavanagh was the informant of the birth of his son, James Joseph, in Blantyre. His occupation was recorded as coal miner.
The 1901 census for Blantyre recorded a family entry for Patrick and Catherine Cavanagh and their three children, living at Coopermindale Place, Stonefield. The children were aged 4 years or under. Patrick was a coal miner aged 32 years and had been born in Bothwell parish. The others were all born in Blantyre.
Patrick was widowed in 1907, and it was Patrick who gave notice of his wife's death. He was recorded then as a coal miner.
In 1957, Patrick's death certificate noted his occupation as 'coal hewer, retired'. He was also recoded as the 'widower of Catherine Cummings'. His age was recorded as 88 years. This was correct. He was in fact one week off his eighty ninth birthday.
In the death certificate of his daughter, Annie, in 1959, Patrick was recorded as a 'coal hewer deceased'.

The informant was James Cavanagh, Patrick's son, of 10 Cypress Avenue, Blantyre, who registered his father's death at Blantyre registry office on April 8 1857.
Patrick married Catherine CUMMINGS, daughter of James CUMMINGS and Anne MURRAY, on 12 July 1895 in St Joseph's RC Chapel, Blantyre, Lanarkshire, Scotland.1 (Catherine CUMMINGS was born on 28 February 1871 in Blantyre, Lanarkshire, Scotland and died 12 February 1907 at 7.00 am in 4 Clark Street, Blantyre, Lanarkshire, Scotland 10.). The cause of her death was scirrhus of the right mammary gland over 24 months and secondary deposit over 6 months.
Marriage Notes:
The marriage was celebrated, after banns, according to the rites and forms of the Roman Catholic Church, Father Edwin Witsker being the celebrating priest. The witnesses were James Cummings and Rose Ann McCaffrey.
Patrick Cavanagh, of Stonefield Road Blantyre, was a bachelor of 26 years, who worked as a coal miner.
Catherine Cummings was 24 years old. She worked as a cotton factory weaver, and she too was of Stonefield, Blantyre. Catherine's father was deceased.
The marriage was registered on 13 July 1895 at Blantyre, George Harries being the registrar. 1
