Sarah Cavanagh was baptised in January 1869 by Father Robert Innes. Her baptismal sponsor was Ellen McOwen.

Sarah was an infant of 2 years when the 1871 census recorded her family living at 111 Mid Row in Rosehall, Old Monkland Parish, Lanarkshire. She had been born in Bothwell Parish. She was the second youngest of the children there.

Sarah was recorded by the 1881 census as aged 11 years, and living with her widowed mother in Blantyre. ^{1 2}
