Mary Cavenagh's birth certificate was drawn up in May 1855, and was therefore contained more detail than later ones. Her birth was notified by her father, Robert, to the registrar, James Burdon, on 17 May 1855. Mary was her mother's second child. Her first child, a boy, had died.

Mary was baptized by Father Michael O'Keeffe on 19 May 1855. Her godparents were James Cavanagh and Jane Cavanagh. ¹
