CAVANAGH, Robert ^{1 2}

  General Notes:

Robert was the elder of a set of twins born to Robert and Martha Cavanagh at New Carnbroe, in the parish of Bothwell, Lanarkshire. Robert Cavanagh senior gave notice of their birth before the registrar, William Richard, at Holytown on 5 May 1866 and made his X mark.

Elizabeth and Robert Cavanagh were baptised in St Patrick's Coatbridge by Father Michael O'Keeffe. Sara Ann Leonard was Elizabeth's sponsor and Elizabeth Furey was Robert's.

Robert was aged 5 years when the 1871 census was taken. He was living in the Rosehall area of Old Monkland parish, with his parents and brothers and sisters. His sister, Elizabeth, who was also recorded as 5 years.

In 1879 a Robert Cavanagh was a witness at the marriage of Thomas Cavanagh, probably his brother.

The 1881 census for Blantyre recorded Robert as aged 15 years.

The 1901 census found Robert married. He lived at Fore Row, Stonefield, Blantyre, with his wife, Elizabeth, his son, John, and two twin daughters, Elizabeth and Martha. Robert was recorded by the census as aged 34 years, and born in Cumbrae, Bute. He worked as a coal miner.

Note: As far as the records found show, Robert may have been born in Cumbrae but his birth was registered only in Holytown, Bothwell Parish. ^{1 2 3 4 5}

Robert married Elizabeth McALLISTER. (Elizabeth McALLISTER was born in 1868 in West Calder, Midlothian, Scotland ⁴.)
