Elizabeth was born after her twin, Robert, in May 1866.

Elizabeth and Robert Cavanagh were baptised in St Patrick's Coatbridge by Father Michael O'Keeffe. Sara Ann Leonard was Elizabeth's sponsor and Elizabeth Furey was Robert's.

Elizabeth was aged 5 years when the 1871 census was taken, as was her brother Robert, and both were born in the parish of Bothwell.

In 1881 the census recorded both Elizabeth and Robert as aged 15 years. ^{1 2 3}
