Martha was baptised on 1 March 1871 by Father Michael O'Keeffe in St patrick's Coatbridge. Winifred Hilly was her baptismal sponsor.

Martha, named after her mother, was just 2 months old when the 1871 census was taken in Old Monkland parish, where she lived with her parents and brothers and sisters.

In 1881 the census recorded Martha living in Blantyre. She was aged 9 years. ^{1 2}
