The 1851 UK census for Clatt in Aberdeenshire recorded John Anderson as head of a household living at Hardgate. His household comprised himself, his wife Margaret, and their ten recorded children. Margaret Anderson was recorded as 41 years old and had been born in Clatt. By occupation (apart from her many children - we know of thirteen births!) she was a carpenter's and farmer's wife.
Margaret Anderson died in New Zealand in 1902. Her death certificate recorded that her name was Margaret Anderson and that she was occupied in domestic duties. Her age at death was 93 years. Her father was Peter Home, a farmer; her mother Christy Strachan. She had been born in Scotland and had lived in New Zealand for 50 years. It also recorded that she had been married in Scotland at the age of 20 years to John Anderson. It listed her living children: three sons aged 71, 60 and 54 years; and six daughters aged 70, 62, 58, 56, 52, and 50 years. The Reverend William Campbell, a presbyterian minister, was present at her funeral.
Note:
Margaret gave birth to six sons and six daughters, therefore by the time of her death three sons must have died. The ages do not exactly correspond with the known ages of her children. 1 6 7
