The 1851 UK census for Clatt in Aberdeenshire recorded John Anderson as head of a household living at Hardgate. His household comprised himself, his wife Margaret, and their ten recorded children. Joseph Anderson was the second son. He was recorded as 15 years old (he was in fact slightly older) and had been born in Clatt. By occupation he was an apprentice carpenter.
