from Births and Baptisms
Old Parish Registers Glenbucket parish Aberdeenshire Baptisms
"1779 Strachen July 4 James Strachen in Drumnagarie had a daughter baptised called Christian before witnesses John Forbes in Cottown of Glenkinday and James Reaburn school master."
In the Inventory of the Moveable Estate of the deceased James Strachan compiled in 1828, James Strachan was recorded as 'sometime farmer at Parkstile of Tillyfour, Oyne, and latterly residing at Mains of Tillyangus who died on the first day of June one thousand eight hundred and twenty eight years'. because James died intestate, his daughter signed an affidavit concerning his estate. 'Aberdeen 31st July 1828. The above is the Inventory of the moveable estate of the deceased James Strachan, father of me Mrs Christian Strachan or Home referred to in the affidavit emitted by me as his Executive before the Commissary of Aberdeen of this date (signed) Christian Strachan'. the document goes on to confirm that Christian Strachan resided at Mains of Tillyangus, but curiously refers to her as the 'only surviving child of the deceased James Strachan sometime farmer residing at Parkstile of Tillyfour of Oyne and latterly residing at Mains of Tillyangus aforesaid and wife of Peter Home farmer there.' The document authorised Christian Strachan to enter into the possession and management of her father's moveable estate. The value of that estate was between one hundred and two hundred pounds sterling.
In 1841 the census for Clatt Parish recorded a household of four girls and women living at Mains of Tillyangus: Christian Home, (indexed as Christian Horne), aged 55 years, Mary Home, aged 8 years, Mary Grant, aged 80 years, and Mary Anderson, aged 7 years. Christian was described as 'independent', that is of independent means. Mary Grant was described as a 'pauper', that is having no earned or unearned income. Three women were born in Aberdeenshire; Mary Grant was born outside of it.
In this group 1 Christian Home was the widowed Christian Strachen. 2 Mary Home was the daughter of James Home and Isobel McLeod, in other words, Christian's granddaughter. 3 Mary Grant was possibly a widowed aunt or other relative of Christian Strachen 4 Mary Anderson was the daughter of Margaret Home and John Anderson, that is, another of Christian's grandchildren. 2 6 7
Research Notes:
MAINS OF TILLIANGUS
This name of this residence has various spellings. The 'Mains' is the 'home' farm of an estate or the principal farm attached to a mansion house or country house. Tilliangus itself is significant in Aberdeenshire history as the place of armed conflict between Gordon and Forbes factions.
DRUMNAGARIE
Drumnagarrow (Glenbucket). Druim nan gearran, "ridge of the horses."
Christian married Peter HOME in Mains of Tilliangus, (DNA Linked), son of James HOME in Pitmachie and Anne LEDINGAME, between 1807 and 1809.1 (Peter HOME in Mains of Tilliangus, (DNA Linked) was baptised on 11 March 1786 in Oyne parish, Aberdeenshire, Scotland and died before 6 June 1841.)
Marriage Notes:
No marriage record for this couple has been found.
The text of Margaret Home's baptism record in Clatt parish register in 1809 referred to her as 'lawful' child of her parents. This means her parents were married before her birth. The marriage between Peter Home and Christian therefore did take place.
It may have taken place in an Episcopal church rather than in the Established Church of Scotland, or it may have been a private ceremony, not recorded in the church registers.
