The 1851 UK census for Clatt in Aberdeenshire recorded John Anderson as head of a household living at Hardgate. His household comprised himself, his wife Margaret, and their ten recorded children. Margaret Anderson junior was the eldest daughter and second eldest child recorded. She was recorded as 18 years old and had been born in Clatt. By occupation she was a carpenter's and farmer's daughter.

Margaret Anderson may have been the female child of Margaret Home still alive in 1902, aged 70 years, according to her death certificate of that year.
