The 1851 UK census for Clatt in Aberdeenshire recorded John Anderson as head of a household living at Hardgate. His household comprised himself, his wife Margaret, and their ten recorded children. Matilda Anderson was the third youngest child recorded. She was recorded as 4 years old and had been born in Clatt. She was a scholar.

Matilda Anderson may have been the female child of Margaret Home still alive in 1902, aged 52 years, according to her death certificate of that year.
