The 1851 UK census for Clatt in Aberdeenshire recorded John Anderson as head of a household living at Hardgate. His household comprised himself, his wife Margaret, and their ten recorded children. David Anderson was recorded as 19 years old and had been born in Clatt. By occupation he was a journeyman carpenter.


David Anderson may have been the male child of Margaret Home still alive in 1902, aged 71 years, according to her death certificate of that year.

David married Elizabeth BELL, daughter of George BELL and Agnes MOFFAT, in 1862 in New Zealand.¹ (Elizabeth BELL was baptised on 17 January 1836 in Dalkeith parish, Midlothian, Scotland,⁴ died on 31 March 1889 in Napier, Nelson, New Zealand ^{3 5} and was buried in 1889 in Napier Courthouse cemetry, Hawkes Bay, New Zealand ³.)
