The 1851 UK census for Clatt in Aberdeenshire recorded John Anderson as head of a James Anderson was the sixth child and second youngest son recorded. He was recorded as 9 years old and had been born in Clatt. He was a scholar.

James Anderson may have been the male child of Margaret Home still alive in 1902, aged 60 years, according to her death certificate of that year.
