The 1851 UK census for Clatt in Aberdeenshire recorded John Anderson as head of a household living at Hardgate. His household comprised himself, his wife Margaret, and their ten recorded children. Sophia Anderson was the fourth eldest child and second daughter recorded. She was recorded as 13 years old and had been born in Clatt. No occupation was noted for her.

Sophia Anderson may have been the female child of Margaret Home still alive in 1902, aged 58 years, according to her death certificate of that year.
