General Notes:
Roman Catholic Records St Margaret's Parish Airdrie Lanarkshire Baptisms
"1846 John lawful (parents) Arthur Quigley and Jane Thomson (born) 1st Decr 1846 (baptised) Decr 13 (sponsors) Peter Quigley and Mary Trainer (priest, signed) Alex Smith " Note: alternative sources from John's life and death in Washington USA records his day of birth as 30 November 1846.
The 1860 US Census of Lake River area of Clark County, Washington Territory, recorded John Quigley living with his family there. He was 13 years of age and had been born in Scotland. He was noted in the occupation column as 'farmer'.
The 1880 US census recorded John and Bythenia Quigley and their family living at Oak Point, Columbia County, in the State of Oregon. John's occupation was logging and they had four sons, including twins, and two daughters between the ages of 1 year and 8 years old. John's age was recorded as 33 years and his birthplace was recorded as Ireland. Three other loggers, John Morrison, aged 35 years, Charles Page, aged 33 years, and William Gaston, aged 35 years, also lived at the same dwelling place. All were white. John's parents were both recorded as having been born in Ireland: Arthur incorrectly so, and Jane correctly.
There is an entry in the Washington State Archives for the 1892 Wahkiakum County census, Cathlamet precinct, for a J. Quigley aged 47 years, born in Scotland, married and working as a logger.
In 1900 John Quigley was recorded as aged 53 years, and living with his wife Bethina A Quigley and their two sons Francis and Edwin in Clatskanie, Columbia, Oregon. John had been born in Scotland, as had his father. His mother was recorded as Irish-born. John had been married in 1870. In fact, there are two records in the 1900 US Census for John Quigley and his son Francis or Frank, born in March 1875, one in Oregon Columbia Clatskanie District 0003 where John Quigley is recorded as a logger, and Francis Quigley as a day labourer in logging work. This is a family entry as Frank's mother and brother, Edwin, are also listed. The other record is in Washington Thurston Bucoda District 0226, which appears to be a workplace, since there are number of boarders who are labourers in the logging camp, and some cooks, a blacksmith etc, and "John Quigly" is recorded as a Boarding House keeper and his son "Frank Quigly" as a "Laborer in loging camp". Their biographical details are the same except that in the fist John's birth is December 1846, and in the second, November 1846.
The 1920 US Census found John, his wife, his daughter and son in law in Cathlamet, Wahkiakum County in Washington State. John Quigley was recorded as head of the family, who owned his house freely. His age was noted as 73 years and 1851 was recorded as his year of emigration to the US. His country of birth was registered as Scotland as was that of his father. His place of birth being Scotland was also noted by several of his children in this census.
'The Skamokawa Eagle' published an obituary for John on 22 April 1926 (a Thursday) which read: "John Quigley, 79, of Cathlamet, died at St Mary's Hospital in Astoria, Tuesday. Funeral services will be held in Cathlamet this afternoon. His survivors are his widow Mrs Bethenia Quigley, a daughter Mrs L. C. Kennedy, of Portland, three sons, Len and Edgar of Cathlamet and Edwin of Portland and 19 grandchildren." Note: As well as the obituary dated 1926, the year 1926 also appears in the Oregon Death Index as the year of John Quigley's death, the death place being Clatsop, but a memorial stone to John and his wife shows the year of John's death as 1924. This may have been erected in 1935, or later, when John's wife died and both parents therefore were dead, and possibly then an error was made regarding the actual year of John's death, an error which has been carried into other secondary sources (see Early Oregonians Index, 1800-1860 and US Find A Grave website).
The 1930 Census for Cathlamet recorded John's son, Ed, aged 52 years, and his wife and family. In the column for 'father's place of birth' John's birthplace was recorded as Scotland. However in the same Census for the same township, Cathlamet, the entry for Leonard Quigly [sic], Ed's brother, noted Leonard's father's birthplace as Oregon. 3 8 9 10 11 12
Research Notes:
JOHN ARTHUR QUIGLEY'S BIRTHPLACE AND DATE
There is a more than some confusion about 'John Arthur'. The 'Pioneers of Clark County' source notes his year of birth as 1847 and place of birth as Scotland; then goes on to give John's baptismal date as 14 April 1852 at Sauvies Island, which is about 20 miles north of Portland.
The 1880 US census for John Quigley, resident at Oak Point with his wife and children, recorded his age as 33 years and his birthplace as Ireland. It seems incredible that John's parents who were Roman Catholics would wait until 1852, having travelled halfway across the globe in a steam ship, to have him baptised, whether or not he was born in Scotland or Ireland. It is likely that this latter fact relates to his brother Thomas, the first of the family born in north America.
There is a record in the baptismal register of St Margaret's RC parish in Airdrie, Lanarkshire, Scotland, of when John was born, the names of his parents, the date of his baptism, the priest who baptised him, and the names of his baptismal sponsors. He may have been born in Ireland, as some Irish families did travel back to make sure their children were Irish born, but unlikely. It is most likely he was born in Scotland, since generally speaking babies were baptised soon after birth in the Roman Catholic Church, and undertaking a crossing from Ireland to Scotland with a young unbaptised baby in such a culture would not make sense.
1880 CENSUS
There were 2039 residents in the county of Columbia in 1880. 'Sauvies Island' was another precinct along with Oak Point in Columbia County.
John married Bethenia BRADBURY, daughter of Clement Adams BRADBURY and Anne HOBSON, on 6 February 1870 in Catholic Church of The Immaculate Conception, Oak Point, Columbia County, Washington State, USA.1 2 (Bethenia BRADBURY was born on 28 February 1852 in Westport, Oregon Territory, USA, died on 1 August 1935 in Wahkiakum, Washington State, USA and was buried on 3 August 1935 in Greenwood Cemetery, Cathlamet, Washington State, USA.)
Marriage Notes:
The Columbia County, Oregon, Marriages 1855-1900 recorded that 'John Quigley and Berthina Bradbury, both of Columbia Co., married 6 Feb 1870 (3 Feb 1870 lic) at the Catholic Church of Immaculate Conception of Portland by J. T. Fierens; wits: John James Olland, Isabelle Quigley.' Pg 189
