In 1841 the census for Anderston in the Barony parish of Glasgow recorded Arthur Twigley aged 15 years living with his mother, brothers and sister at 114 Main Street. In the occupation column it stated "works at brick making". His birthplace was noted as being outside the census county in which he lived.

The 1860 US Census for Clark County, Washington Territory, dated 1 June 1860, recorded Arthur Quigley, his wife Jane and their six children living in the Lake River (Post Office) area. Arthur was a farmer, and next door neighbour to James Carty, also a farmer, and Pope Williams, another farmer. Beyond the Williams farm lived James Quigley, his wife and their family, newly arrived from Scotland. Arthur was recorded as 34 years of age and had been born in Scotland. The value of his real estate was recorded as $4,500 and his personal estate as $1000.

The authority for that same document mentioned was noted as 'September 27 1850: Oregon-Donation Act (grant) (99 Stat. 496)'.
The authority for all the other documents listed above was noted as 'April 24 1820: Sale-Cash Entry (3 Stat. 566)'.

The 1871 Washington State and Territorial Census for Clark County, Washington Territory in March of that year, recorded Arthur Quigley, his wife and nine of their children, starting with Thomas and excluding Margaret. All of the children listed were born in Washington Territory, except Thomas who was listed as born in Oregon. Arthur was recorded as a white male, 45 years old and born in Scotland with parents of non-U.S. birth. He worked as a farmer and was a US citizen.

The United States federal census of 1880 recorded Arthur, head of the household, his wife, and three sons, living in District 3 of Clark County, Washington. Arthur and his wife Jane were recorded as both having parents of Irish birth.
(Note:This we know not to be true of Arthur's mother Catherine Lynas, although Arthur himself may not have known that, or possibly Jane did not.)
Arthur was recorded as born in Scotland and Jane as born in Ireland. The three sons named, Arther[sic], Michael, and Peter were all recorded as born in Washington State, USA. Arthur's occupation was recorded as 'farmer'. His age was noted as 54 years, exactly correct.

The 1880 census also recorded Arthur's son John and his wife. In the return Arthur was incorrectly recorded as having been born in Ireland and his wife Jane correctly recorded so.

A book about the Pioneers of Clark County, published by the Washington State Genealogical Society, described Arthur as a farmer who registered his cattle mark - "A. Q., a crop and a slit in the right ear and a dulap" - with the Clark County Clerk.

In the Washington State and Territorial Censuses, 1857-1892, the Record for Arthur Quigley taken in March 1883 for Clark County, Washington Territory, recorded him as a farmer, born in Scotland, married, and aged 56 years at his last birthday. He was also noted as being a U.S. citizen of 21 years and upwards.

The 1885 Washington Territory census recorded Arthur Quigley, his son Peter Quigley and his son-in-law Lewis Damphoffer, living side by side in Washington Territory. The census page does not specify any other geographical details but the assumption is that it is still Clark County. Arthur was noted as 60 years of age and by occupation a Liquor Deal(er). He is also listed as single. He was recorded as born in Scotland and by then a U.S. citizen.

In the 1887 Washington Territory census for Clark County a 60 year old A. Quigley is registered. His place of birth however is noted as Ireland. He was a U.S. citizen and single. No occupation for him is noted. 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11

Noted events in his life were:

1. Emigration: to North America, 19 December 1850, Ayrshire, Scotland. Arthur was one of a small group of miners who were recruited by the Hudson Bay Company to bring their skills to their outposts in Canada: Fort Rupert and Nanaimo, coal towns of Vancouver Island in the extreme west of Canada. This was between 15 and 20 years before Canada became a country in 1867.

2. Arrival, June 1851, Fort Vancouver, Clark County, Washington State, USA. Arthur along with his travelling companions and crew had to evacuate the ship 'Pekin' in which they were travelling after it ran aground on a sandbar at the mouth of the Columbia River. They were able to continue their journey later up the Columbia, arriving safely at Fort Vancouver in the August of 1851. It seems, from the dating of his children's births, that Arthur and his wife did not proceed to Nanaimo, but remained in the area around the Columbia River.

3. Application for Citizenship: US, 1852, District Court, Washington County, Oregon, USA. Arthur's Declaration of Intent to become a US citizen was filed on May 4 1852.

4. Arrival, 1852, Clark County, Washington State, USA. Arthur settled on Sauvies Island with his wife and young son, according to 'Clark County Pioneers' by Rose Marie Harshman.

5. Land Claim: Donation, 1 June 1854. of 319.36 acres on Twp. 4 N., R. 1 W. & 1 E., Sec. 19 & 24.

6. Census: U.S, 1880, District 3, Clark County, Washington State, USA.

Arthur married Jane THOMSON on 23 February 1846 in St Margaret's RC Church, Airdrie, Lanarkshire, Scotland.1 (Jane THOMSON was born in 1826 in Carrican, County Tyrone, Ireland,10 died on 6 September 1884 12 and was buried in St James's RC Cemetery (aka Mount Joseph Catholic Cemetery), Vancouver, Washington State, USA 12 13.)
