The 1861 census recorded Samuel living with his family in Old Rome near Dundonald, Ayrshire. His age was noted as 6 years, and his birthplace was recorded as Old Monkland, Lanarkshire.
Note: the baptism record for Samuel in 1854 records his family's residence at the time of baptism as "N.Monkld" New Monkland
The 1871 census for Galston, Ayrshire, recorded Samuel Tweedley as 16 years of age, and living with his parents and younger sisters and brothers at Knowehead Rows. He was recorded as a coal miner, so presumably worked with his father at Knowehead Pit. He was unmarried. The record notes his birthplace only as 'Lanarkshire'.
In 1875, Samuel Quigley was one of two witnesses at the marriage of his sister Rebecca at Crookedholm, near Galston, Ayrshire.
The birth certificate of Peter Twedley [sic] recorded him as the son of Samuel Twedley, coal miner, and Agnes Rate who had been married at Cambusnethan on 17 May 1880. Samuel Twedley, the father, gave notice of the birth before the registrar at Hamilton on 1 February 1881.
In 1882, Samuel was the informant of the birth of his son, James. He also gave the date and place of his marriage as 17 May 1880 at Cambusnethan. The birth certificate recorded his occupation as coal miner.
Samuel notified the registrar at Hamilton, William J. T. Rae, on 4 August 1892, of the birth of the first of his daughters to be called Rebecca, two days before. His occupation was noted as coal miner, and his date of marriage as 17 May 1880 at Cambusnethan parish. Samuel signed his name, on this occasion, as Samuel Tweedley. Sadly, he repeated most of this on 28 December 1893, when the same Rebecca died of meningitis.
After this first Rebecca's death, the family moved house at some stage, for a new daughter Rebecca was born to them at Duke Street, Hamilton in 1895. Samuel Tweedley signed the notification of her birth before William J. T. Rae, on 15 January 1895, and in this instance his occupation was noted as 'underground roadman'.
The 1901 census for Hamilton, Lanarkshire recorded Samuel Tweedley, his wife and children, and two boarders, living at 40 Duke Street. Samuel's occupation was noted as 'barman spirit trade'. His age was recorded as 45 years, and his birthplace as Old Monkland parish. The two boarders were James Gilbert and Thomas Aitkenhead, both 18 years, and both railway engine cleaners.
In Agnes Twedley's marriage certificate of 1904, her father, was recorded as 'Samuel Twedley coalminer'.
Samuel's son, Peter, was married in 1905. Peter's father's occupation, then, was noted as coal miner.
The 1911 census for Motherwell recorded Samuel Tweedley as head of a household living at 97b Airbles Street Motherwell, Lanarkshire. The household comprised himself, his wife Agnes and three daughters. Living with them and recorded as a boarder was their son in law Matthew Scott, a Glasgow born 27 year old man who worked as an irondriller in a waggon builder company. Samuel Tweedley was a colliery foreman aged 55 years who had been born in Monkland, Lanarkshire.
At the time of his daughter Rebecca's marriage, in 1916, Samuel was recorded as a colliery fireman.
In the ship manifest of the SS Columbia sailing from Glasgow Scotland on 27 December 1919 were recorded the names of Samuel, Agnes and Sarah Tweedley bound for New York, where they arrived on 6 January 1920. Their ultimate destination was Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. All were Scots of British nationality, who had been living in Motherwell. All could read and write and all spoke English. Samuel was a married man of 63 years of age who worked as a fireman. He gave the name of his son, Peter Tweedley, as that of his nearest relative in the place he had come from. Peter's address was noted as 162 Watsonville, Motherwell.
By 1920 Samuel Tweedley was recorded by the 1920 U.S. Census living in Philadelphia in the state of Pennsylvania with his wife and some of his adult children. Samuel, Augnes [sic] and Sara Tweedley were living at 6351 Buist Avenue with Mathew and Jeanie Scot and their infant son. Their nearest neighbours were James and Isabelle Tweedley [sic]. Samuel, Augnes, Jeanie and Archabold seem to have left Scotland for the USA in 1919 and were still of alien status. Samuel was recorded by the census as 56 years of age. In fact he was about 10 years older than that. All of them were of Scottish birth, as were all their parents. Samuel worked as a 'machinist' in a machine shop.
An item from an American descendant of Samuel Tweedley, Bill Master, reads as follows:
I have a copy of a hospital bill from when Samuel Tweedley (Quigly) came to Philadelphia to see a doctor. He was operated on and died shortly after. He actually died in Philadelphia but his son James took his body to Springfield Massachusetts so that he could be buried in Oakgrove Cemetery. 2 5 6 7 10 11 12 14 16 19 20 21 22 23 24 25

Agnes Rate was an unmarried woman, working as a domestic servant and was aged 18 years.
Both resided in Marshall Street, Wishaw.
