  General Notes:

Samuel Twedley, father of James, gave notice of the child's birth before the registrar at Hamilton, William Potter, on 10 May 1882.

The 1901 census for Hamilton, Lanarkshire recorded James aged 18 years and by occupation an apprentice washer fitter. He had been born in Hamilton and was a single man.

James left Scotland in 1908 and went to Canada. He left Quebec for Wyoming USA and then went Massachusetts in 1909. In the ship's Manifest for this journey James Tweedley was recorded as aged 26 years, a machinist, and his address was 97 Airbles Street, Motherwell. While in Wyoming he lived at the home of a Mrs Massey in Hanna, Carbon County. James must have been strongly impressed by this woman for he gave her last name to his daughter Jeanie and his son John as middle names.

The 1920 U.S. Census for Philadelphia, Pennsylvania recorded James Tweedley as the head of a household living in a rented home at 6361 Buist Avenue comprising himself, his wife Isabelle [sic], and their four children: Isabelle, James, Alexander, and Jeanie. His mother and father Samuel and Augnes [sic] Tweedley, recently arrived from Scotland in 1919, lived at 6351 Buist Avenue with some other family members. James was 37 years old and had immigrated to the U.S. in 1908. He was naturalised in 1915. He could read and write, and he had been born in Scotland as had his parents. Their mother tongue was English. He worked as a machinist in the Air Brake Co.

In 1942 James Tweedley completed a registration card for the government for the war draft. His serial number was U 3136 and his address 6346 Paschall Avenue Philadelphia. His telephone number was noted as SAT 7209, his date of birth April 21 1882 and his birthplace as Hamilton Scotland. It stated he was naturalized. The person who would always know his address was Mrs Isabella Tweedley of the same address as his own. His employer's names was Messenger Bearings C and address:D St above Eric Ave Philadelphia PA. In a fine firm and modestly flowing signature James Tweedley affirmed his answers were true. 1 4 6 7 8

James married Isabella GIBSON, daughter of James McALLISTER and Agnes DONALDSON, on 10 April 1912 in West Warren, Massachusetts, USA.1 2 (Isabella GIBSON was born 29 November 1889 at 9.30 pm in 152 Common Loch, Lugar, Ayrshire, Scotland,9 died on 19 September 1962 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA 10 and was buried in Lot 10, Division U, Section 57, Mount Moriah Cemetery, Philadelphia, USA 1.)


  Marriage Notes:

James Tweedley and Isabella Gibson were married on 12 April 1912 by William.A. Wilkinson at the Methodist Episcopal Church in West Warren Massachusetts USA.

James was aged 29 years and a machinist, and Isabella was 22 years old and at home. For both it was their first marriage. Both were resident in Warren and both had been born in Scotland.

The names of the parents of the groom were recorded as Samuel (Tweedley?, not inscribed) and Agnes Raite. The bride's parents were James (Gibson?, not inscribed) and Agnes Donaldson.

The marriage was recorded on 11 April 1912. 1 2
