The 1841 census recorded Helen Cairney living with Duncan and Martha McLean, probably as a lodger or boarder, and her father, in Bridge Lane within the Abbey parish of Paisley. Helen was in the 15-19 years age group and had been born in Renfrewshire. She worked as a throwster.
The 1851 census for Abbey Parish, Paisley, recorded Thomas Cumming head of a household of three, himself, his wife and his son. The family lived at 31 Thread Street. His wife was named as Ellen Cumming. She was recorded as 27 years old, a year younger than her husband, and had been born in Paisley.
In 1861 Thomas Cumming headed a household of six people living at 27 Thread Street. As well as himself and his wife, the census recorded Thomas as having three children of his own and one adopted daughter. Helen Cumming, wife of Thomas, was recorded as being 37 years old, the same age as Thomas, and born in Paisley.
Thomas Cummings [sic] was 43 years old when recorded by the census of that year. Born in Paisley, he lived in 20 Orr Street, Bridgeton in Glasgow Calton, Lanarkshire, with his wife Ellen and their two daughters Frances and Jane. Ellen Cummings was recorded as 42 years of age and was Paisley born like her husband. 1
