The 1841 census recorded Conelius Cairney [sic] living at Bridge Lane in the Abbey parish district of Paisley. With him lived Helen Cairney, probably his daughter. Conelius was a cotton handloom weaver, aged in the 35-39 years age group, and was Irish born. He lived with, and the 1841 census does not state in what capacity, Duncan McLean and Martha McLean.

In 1851 Cornelius Carney [sic] was recorded by the census. He was a widower, and was lodging at 58 George Street Paisley with a widow, Elisabeth Beatie and two cotton weavers John McGregor, aged 44 years, and Alexander Downie, aged 26 years, all Scots born. Cornelius was aged 50 years and had been born in Dublin Ireland. He was a weaver's enterer by occupation. 2 3

  Marriage Notes:

The Old Parish Marriage Register of High Church Parish Paisley records in Proclamations under 'Karney' for the 30 November 1823 (a Sunday). 'Cornelius Karney and Mary Quigly both in this parish'.

These were the start of the banns for the marriage, called in the Established Church in High Church Parish Paisley. The excerpt from the OPR ends 'Married 19th December by Reverend William Cavan Catholic'. In the right hand column reads '3 days' and '1 (shilling)'.

A search has been made in the Roman Catholic registers for this marriage but none has been found so far. 4 5
