In 1861 Thomas Cumming headed a household of six people living at 27 Thread Street. As well as himself and his wife, the census recorded Thomas as having three children of his own and one adopted daughter. Frances Cumming was the eldest of the Cummings' children listed. She was 8 years old and had been born in Paisley. She was a scholar.

Thomas Cummings [sic] was 43 years old when recorded by the census of that year. Born in Paisley, he lived in 20 Orr Street, Bridgeton in Glasgow Calton, Lanarkshire, with his wife Ellen and their two daughters Frances and Jane. Frances Cummings was recorded as 17 years of age and was Paisley born like her parents. She worked as a wool weaver.
