The 1861 census for Shotts parish in Lanarkshire recorded Thomas and Catherine Vallely with their baby daughter Sarah. Catherine was recorded as 20 years of age and had been born in Ireland.

Catherine was recorded by the 1871 census for Shotts parish. She was noted as being 28 years old, fifteen years younger than her husband Thomas. She lived at 6 Greenhill near Cleland, Lanarkshire.

Baby Elizabeth Vallaley's birth at Greenhill, in Shotts parish, in 1875 was notified by her mother, Catharine Vallily. Catharine signed her name before Alex. Paterson, registrar, at Shotts on 15 October 1875. Catharine Vallily also provided for the registrar her date and place of marriage: 29 August 1859 at Dungannon Ireland.

The 1881 census recorded Catherine and her family of eight children still living at the hamlet of Greenhill, near Cleland, in the parish of Shotts. Her age was recorded as 40 years. Her eight children were aged from 19 years to 2 years.

In the 1891 census Catherine was still resident in the parish of Shotts. She was living in a section of a 'rural and detached country house' area, at 4 Wyndedge Old Farm, Cleland. The house had two windowed rooms. By this time Catherine was a widow with eight children, her husband Thomas having died two years before. Her children were now aged from 27 years to 7 years. Catherine's own age was noted as 50 years.

Catherine died in 1897. Her recorded age at death was 56 years old. 2 9 10 11 12

  Research Notes:

WINDYEDGE

In the 17th century 'Windyedge' seems to have had two areas to it: "Easteirwindiedge and Westerwindiedge".

It was mainly farm land which, by Catherine's time, was also populated by coal mining families living in miners' rows or cottages, digging out the mineral from underground for the benefit of themselves and, predominantly, the land owner.

QUINN

According to Edward McLysaght, expert in Irish names, Quinn is one of the most numerous of Irish surnames and predominant in Count Tyrone. There are five septs of the name who occupied distinct territories throughout Ireland, sometimes giving their surname to place names of their territory. Some Quinn or O'Quinn families settled in France, becoming leading citizens in Bordeaux and Pau. 13 14

  Medical Notes:

The causes of death were certified by Doctor John Lithgow.

John Vallely, Catherine's son who had been present where the death occurred, gave notice of his mother's before the registrar at Cleland, William Spence, on the 25 August 1897 15

Catharine married Thomas VALLELY, son of Charles VALLELY in Glebe, DNA Linked and Sarah CORRIGAN (DNA Linked), on 31 August 1859 in Dungannon RC parish, County Tyrone, Ireland.1 2 3 (Thomas VALLELY was baptised on 9 May 1826 in Dungannon RC parish, County Tyrone, Ireland and died 2 July 1889 at 7.30 am in Parkhead, Cleland, Shotts Parish, Lanarkshire, Scotland 6.). The cause of his death was chronic bronchitis over eighteen months.
