Thomas's father, who had been present, gave notice of his son's birth to the registrar at Shotts, William Paterson, on 22 August 1872. He signed his name as 'Vallely' even though the registrar himself used the spelling 'Vallaley'.
In the 1881 census Thomas was aged 8 years and still a scholar.
In 1891 Thomas was living in Cleland area, aged 18 years, unmarried and a coalminer.
In 1901 the census recorded Thomas Valelly, a single man, living with a group of his brothers and sisters at Windyedge near Cleland in Shotts Parish. Thomas was recorded as 27 years of age and worked as a coal miner. He had been born in Shotts.
