  General Notes:

When Margaret was born in 1857 her mother, Isabella Nisbet, or Isabella Sandilands gave notice of the birth before the registrar at Edinburgh on 16 January 1858 and signed her statement. Margaret was registered as the daughter of William Nisbet, although Isabella Sandilands had been married to Robert Haddow since 1846. The birth is registered under 1858.

The 1861 census entry for 2 Craig's Close, High Street, in the St Giles district of Edinburgh found Margaret Haddow aged 3, and inscribed as the daughter of Robert and Isabella Haddow. Her birthplace was recorded as Trinity College, Edinburgh. William Nisbet, her father according to her birth certificate, was himself a boarder in the same house where she lived which had 2 windowed rooms..

In 1871 the census for the St Giles district of Edinburgh recorded 'Margaret Hadden' living at 2 Craig Close, High Street, with Robert Hadden, Isabella Hadden (wife), Isabella Hadden (daughter), and William Nisbet, a boarder aged 50. The wife was Isabella Sandilands, married to Robert Haddow in 1846. Isabella and William Nisbet were Margaret's parents according to her birth certificate of 1857. Now she was recorded as the daughter of the head of the household Robert Haddow or Hadden and had adopted the use of Robert's surname. This Margaret Hadden, recorded in 1871, was aged 13, a scholar, and had been born in Edinburgh, and is undoubtedly the same 'Margaret Nisbet' whose birth was recorded in 1857 by her mother. The boarder, William Nisbet, was undoubtedly the William Nisbet named on her birth certificate as her father.

In 1874 Isabella Haddow was married and Margaret Haddow was a witness at the wedding.

When Margaret Haddow married on 31 December 1878 she had just turned 21. In her marriage certificate it was Robert Haddow, deceased, who was recorded as her father, although William Nisbet was registered as her father in her birth certificate.

When Henry William Richards was born in 1887 his mother, Margaret Richards, was the informant of his birth before the registrar, William Blair, at Edinburgh on 13 September 1887. The date and place of her marriage was noted as '1879 December 29 Edinburgh'.

The 1891 census for Edinburgh Canongate recorded Margaret Richards living at 11 West Adam Street with her two sons, Alfred and Henry. Margaret was recorded as 29 years old and had been born in Edinburgh. She was a dressmaker.

The 1901 census for Edinburgh recorded Margaret Lochhead as the head of the household living at 15 Caledonian Crescent. Her age was noted as 40 years and her birthplace as Edinburgh. She was a dressmaker. With her lived three sons, all surnamed Lochhead: Alfred aged 16 years and born in South Africa, Aleck aged 8 years and born in Scotland, and Norman aged 6 years and born in England.

Margaret Lochhead died in 1954, at the recorded age of 95. In fact she was in her 97th year. She was the widow of first Henry William Richards, band sergeant of the Argyll and Sutherland Higlanders, and second of Alexander Lochhead, colours sergeant, also of the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders. Margaret's usual residence was 95 Dalry Road Edinburgh. No information about Margaret's parents was given in her death certificate, except that they were surnamed Haddow and were deceased. ^{3 4}

OLD PHYSIC GARDENS

Margaret Nisbet, daughter of William Nisbet and Isabella Sandilands, was born in 1857 at 57 Old Physic Gardens in Edinburgh. At that time, between 1858 and 1867, the firm of printers called John Greig & Son were located at 6 Old Physic Garden Edinburgh.

OSWALD ROAD EDINBURGH

The Astley-Ainslie Hospital is situated in Oswald Road, Edinburgh, and Margaret may well have been a patient there at the time of her death.

Isabella Richard [sic], daughter in law of the deceased, of 95 Dalry Road Edinburgh, gave notice of Margaret's death before the registrar, H. M. Mitchell, at Edinburgh on May 26 1954.

Margaret married Henry William RICHARDS Private Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, son of John Henry RICHARDS and Harriet DAWSON, on 31 December 1878 in 3 Marchhall Crescent, Newington, Edinburgh, Scotland. (Henry William RICHARDS Private Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders was born on 29 April 1859, baptised on 15 July 1860 in St Mary, Lewisham, Kent, England and died between 1887 and 1919 ^{2 3}.)

  Marriage Notes:

The minister was James Cameron, snr., DD, Minister of High Parish. The witnesses were Jane Kilgour and John Murphy.

Henry William Richards was a bachelor of 20 years of age resident at the Royal Barracks Dublin. He was a Private in the 91st Regiment of Foot. His father was deceased.

Margaret Haddow was aged 20 years and unmarried. She worked as a dressmaker and resided at 2 Craig's Close, High Street, Edinburgh. She was recorded as the daughter of Robert Haddow, iron moulder, deceased, and Isabella Sanderlands [sic].

The marriage was registered on 10 January 1879 at Edinburgh, D.R. Brown being the registrar.

Margaret next married Alexander LOCHHEAD Colours Sergeant Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders, son of John LOCHHEAD and Margaret BARBOUR, on 25 November 1892 in No. 14 George Ivth Bridge, Edinburgh, Scotland. (Alexander LOCHHEAD Colours Sergeant Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders was born on 20 May 1866 in Abbey Parish, Paisley, Renfrewshire, Scotland and died 16 November 1896 about 6.50 pm in Barracks, Maryhill, Glasgow, Scotland.). The cause of his death was gunshot wound of right side of head.

  Marriage Notes:

The marriage was celebrated according to the forms of the Church of Scotland. The minister was George Kirkwood, Chaplain to the Forces. Henry Robertson Keills and Robina Smith were witnesses.

Alex Lochhead was a colour sergeant with the Argyle [sic] and Sutherland Highlanders. He was a bachelor of 26 years of age and lived at Edinburgh Castle. His father was deceased.

Margaret Hadden or Richards was the widow of Harry Richards, a private in the Argyle [sic] and Sutherland Highlanders. She was recorded as 27 years old and lived at NO. 19 St John Street Edinburgh. Her parents were deceased, her father being recorded as Robert Hadden her mother's husband.

The marriage was recorded at Edinburgh on 28 November 1892.
