  General Notes:

The 1841 census for the Royal Infirmary in Edinburgh recorded a young woman in the 20-24 years age range called Isabella Sandilands (indexed as Sandlands). Her birth county was Midlothian, and her occupation was noted as 'maker'.

In 1851 Isabella Haddon was recorded as aged 29 years by the census of that year. She lived with her husband Robert and her son Alexander at 218 Greenside Place Edinburgh. No occupation was noted for her. Her birthplace was Edinburgh.

Isabella gave birth to her daughter Catherine on 2 January 1856. She herself notified the registrar on 18 January 1856. Two items may be mentioned: first the father was inscribed as JOHN Haddow, not Robert. Secondly Isabella signed her name, it seemed, with some difficulty- 'Isadella Haddow' with the 'b' reversed to a 'd' and the letter 'i' instead of an 'e' in 'Isabella'.

Isabella Nisbet was the informant of the birth of her daughter Margaret. Margaret was born on 27 December 1857 and the birth was registered by Isabella, who signed her name, at Edinburgh on 16 January 1858.

In 1861 the census recorded Isabella Haddow, aged 40 years, Robert Haddow aged 41 years, Isabella Haddow aged 8 years, and Margaret Haddow aged 3 years living in the St Giles district of Edinburgh at 2 Craig's Close, High Street..

In 1871 the census recorded Isabella Haddow living at 2 Craig Close, High Street, Edinburgh, with her husband Robert, her two daughters, Isabella and Margaret, and a boarder William Nisbet. Isabella was a married woman of 40 years, according to the census, and had been born in St Cuthbert's district of Edinburgh.

In 1876 Isabella Sandilands [sic] was the informant of the death of her husband Robert Haddow at 2 Craig's Close, High Street, Edinburgh and made her X mark.

The 1881 census for Edinburgh High Church recorded Isabella Haddon [sic] as head of the household at 2 Craig's Close or 265 High Street. Resident there with her were her daughter, Isabella Thomson, her grandson, George Thomson, and a lodger, Mary McCorkindale, a married woman of 39 years, born in Glasry Argyll, who worked as a laundress. Isabella Haddon was recorded as having been born in St Cuthbert's Edinburgh. She was widowed and aged 62 years.

Isabella died in 1885. Her death certificate recorded her as the widow of Robert Haddow, iron moulder, and her age as 64 years. 3 4

  Medical Notes:

There was no qualified medical attendant for the dying woman.

Isabella's daughter, Isabella Thomson, who had been present, gave notice of her mother's death before Thomas Semple, registrar, at Edinburgh on November 14 1885.

Isabella had a relationship with William NISBET, son of Thomas NISBET (DNA Linked) and Helen GOVENLOCK (DNA Linked). (William NISBET was born in 1819 in Innerleithen, Peebleshire, Scotland 5 6 and died 9 July 1888 at 0.45 pm in Crookston Crossing, Stow, Midlothian, Scotland 7.). The cause of his death was inflammation of the bowels over 1 month.

Isabella next married Robert HADDOW, son of Robert HADDOW and Agnes LINDSAY, on 3 July 1846 in Pilrig Free Church, Edinburgh, Scotland.1 (Robert HADDOW was born on 28 February 1820 in Saint Cuthbert's parish, Edinburgh, Scotland and died 18 February 1876 at 3.40 am in 2 Craig's Close, High Street, Edinburgh, Scotland.). The cause of his death was typhus fever over 10 days.
