  General Notes:

Extracts from Session Minutes of 1st Secession (Burgher) Church, Tweed Brae, Peebles:

28 November 1809
"Received a report from Alexr Dickson who was appointed to enquire at Hellen Nisbet about a report concerning Willm Welsh his offering to seduce her to the sin of Adultry, after hearing the report they agree to proceed no further in the matter till William Welsh was present"
It is clear from the text here that Hellen Nisbet was a married woman, and probably a youngish one, given the context. For our own assumptions, and since we know Thomas N had a daughter Helen who married about 1817/1818, if we investigate the possibility that Hellen Nisbet was the wife of Thomas, who could she be? The IGI brings up no marriages in the 50 years before 1809. The only one for a Thomas Nisbet marrying a Helen is in Selkirk: on 8 June 1797 Thomas Nisbet m Helen Govenlock in Selkirk parish. So she at least is a possible link.

28 January 1810
"The session met…heard the declaration of Hellen Nisbet in Eshiels which was that Willm Welsh offered violence to her to seduce her to the sin of Adultry also declares for the sake of getting guile of him to her house in the absense of her husband Compeared also Willm Welsh and acknowledged the justness of her declaration the session after reasoning on the matter agreed to dismiss Hellen Nisbet and to admonish Willm Welsh he was admonished accordingly by (blank space left) Closed with a prayer"
The sawmill, gasworks and yard that bear the name Eshiels in current maps, are on the road about half way between Innerleithen and Peebles. Horsburgh Castle Farm, where Thomas Nisbet worked, is in the same area as Eshiels, closer to Eshiels than to either Innerleithen or Peebles. In fact they appear to be part of the same estate, the coordinates for Eshiels being 55.6426N, 3.1861W, and those for the Farm plan of Chapelyards showing steadings and field boundaries in colour. Horsburgh Castle, Scots mill and road to Kelso being 55.6426N, 3.1861W, in other words, exactly the same. Horsburgh Castle farm's coordinates are 55.641212N, 3.121591W. This may relate to this woman - or may not.
