In the death certificate of his son Henry in 1937, and of his widow in 1954 Henry was recorded as a band sergeant in the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders.

Anerley School

The North Surrey District School for pauper children, later known as Anerley School, opened at Penge in 1850. It aimed to teach children basic literacy and numeracy skills, and (more importantly) practical skills such as shoemaking, baking, farming for boys, and sewing or washing for girls. It was initially run jointly by the Boards of Guardians of Croydon, Wandsworth and Clapham, Kingston, Lewisham and Richmond, and the parish of St Luke, Chelsea.

Henry married Margaret NISBET, daughter of William NISBET and Isabella SANDILANDS, on 31 December 1878 in 3 Marchhall Crescent, Newington, Edinburgh, Scotland. (Margaret NISBET was born on 27 December 1857 in 57 Old Physic Gardens, Edinburgh, Scotland 3 and died 25 May 1954 at 8.55 am in 3 Oswald Road, Edinburgh, Scotland.). The cause of her death was myocardial degeneration with arteriosclerosis.


  Marriage Notes:

The minister was James Cameron, snr., DD, Minister of High Parish. The witnesses were Jane Kilgour and John Murphy.

Henry William Richards was a bachelor of 20 years of age resident at the Royal Barracks Dublin. He was a Private in the 91st Regiment of Foot. His father was deceased.

Margaret Haddow was aged 20 years and unmarried. She worked as a dressmaker and resided at 2 Craig's Close, High Street, Edinburgh. She was recorded as the daughter of Robert Haddow, iron moulder, deceased, and Isabella Sanderlands [sic].

The marriage was registered on 10 January 1879 at Edinburgh, D.R. Brown being the registrar.
